game problems
« on: 26 April 2010, 03:30:46 »
I'm not a big gamer but enjoy glest.  My computer is less than a year old and runs vista.  I've played simcity 4 on the system with no problem and though I know little of computer gaming I would assume if the computer can handle simcity, it should be equipped to handle playing glest.  My problem is this, any time I have conflict, no matter where on the map it occurs, the whole game becomes irritatingly slow, so much so, it's nearly impossible to react to conflict, move troops to the point of conflict.  I have also noticed at times, when finally defeating an enemy, the game seems to go into a super fast speed.  What is causing this change in game speed because when it slows the way it does, the game becomes unenjoyable to play.  I have tried the game speed controls in the game as well as downloading the game booster software with no success.

What video card, CPU and operating system do you use for glest? What resolution do you run Glest at also?

These are all very important to answer your question.

Is it like Ultifds videos? if so, i belive it is the particles causing the lagg.

Thank you.  I have an HP but has the athlon processor.  I'm not really clear on some properties so can only say NVIDIA and the card is GEForce 6150SE nForce 430.  I have windows vista with service pack 2.  I don't know if this is what you're looking for.  I'm not sure on the resolution though as I'm not very computer oriented but it's a 20in widescreen monitor running at what says 1440 by 900 and says 32 bit there too.  I know these terms in that the usual wallpaper runs 1024 by 768 but am unsure as to the connection so I hope I supplied enough right info to help with this problem because as much as I enjoy the game, this problem just makes the game unenjoyable at times.

I'm not sure what an Ultifds video is.  The game starts out in what I think is normal speed, movement, creating units, ect. but then the games changes and moves like everything is in slow motion.  This always seems to start when I engage in a conflict, or when the opponent invades my territory.  It becomes nearly impossible to engage in a battle as the curser is in slow motion and if I don't click exactly where the battle is on the map, and have to scroll a bit, it takes forever to scroll but when I pause the game I can zip all over the map.

one single hostile unit can cause the lagg and this doesn't go away until I defeat everyone and then the game either goes back to normal speed or it goes into a crazy fast pace.  It seems it can take a unit 5-10 minutes to cross a full 128 by 128 map but in this fast pace, they do it in 5-10 seconds, using an air unit like the thunderbird.  Battles have become impossible to engage in when the lagg happens and it always happens, though it seems to wait a bit when I'm playing a single computer opponent and comes faster when playing 4 player.

seems like a driver problem. try update your drivers from your computer manufacturers site or from the nvidia.com website.

Make sure to backup your current driver, if you install the wrong one, you might not be able to play at all... :look: :look:

It almost sounds like it's a problem with AI battling.

Do you usually have any sort of other programs running in the background at the same time? Torrent downloads or anti-virus scanners that are constantly on?

The updated driver seemed to do the trick though I haven't played a full game with the last Glest version yet since  I downloaded megaglest and have been using that with no problem.  Thanks again and I run bare minimum as far as programs running in the background during the gameplay using the iobit gamebooster software to kill unneeded processes during the game.
