Tileset Contest!
« on: 26 April 2010, 23:13:00 »
Contest time!

I was browsing around the wiki and realized that there are no Western tilesets. you know, cacti and cow skulls (think Texas, southwestern idea)

so, i have put up this contest to see who can make the best Western tileset, because i think Glest needs one.

ok then, 1...2...3..go!

How should a western tileset look like? We need photos!
( Like scrubland from megaglest? )

well, a western tileset would be much different from the current desert. For example, a western tileset would need things like cacti, cow skulls, small bushes, and maybe small adobe houses. besides, there are no palm trees in Texas...

Dude, the changes would hardly be noticeable, I don't think the work is worth it.

Agreed.  The idea of a tileset is to provide a different playing experience, and I just don't see that happening here.

Just to throw in an idea, how about a fantasy tileset, sort of like what Omega did in (summer '08, was it?).

Ugh, I never got around to finishing that. It would be very cool. Moss and vines over growing statues, everything having an ancient runes sort of feel. Like you just stepped into a ruined temple that hasn't seen humans for hundreds of years.

Perhaps that would do well in a tileset contest?

Most of the western US high plains deserts are quite similar. Sagebrush, junipers, pinion pines, cedar and cotton woods with red dirt soil or silty sand mixed with alkaline. Image search on Moab, death valley, black rock desert for interesting terrain features. The saguaro (tree-sized cactus) and Joshua tree are probably the most interesting plants for tilesets. Sun-bleached skulls and bones sound cool but look bad if overused as objects models C5-c10 or replace standard tileset bush and water object models.

Imladris tileset is an excellent example of Glest fantasy object models.

An Aussie outback tileset with eucalyptus, thornbrush and assorted billabong and other surface texture types might also be interesting.

Wasn't sure where to post this and didn't want to make a new topic.
Who created the luften, shontuz, and wandergart tilesets?  They are all great, wandergart being my favorite.  Are there more tilesets from this author?

Unfortunately, the last time I tried to download them...I think from the Glest site, I end up deleting them afterwards for some reason...  :| I think I thought it was something else...
Anyways, if it's good, maybe I'll look at them...again.  ::)  :O

If I recall, they are only retextured. I downloaded, look at, deleted. Useless.

generally accepted as the best tilesets:
* Autumn
* Desert
* Evergreen
* Imladris
* Jungle
* Mediterranean
* New Winter
* Scrub Land
* Spring
* Swamp
* Tropical
* Volcanic

Less popular tilesets but still pretty good:
* Hell
* Pine Woods
* Moon
* Freak Forest
* Meadow

Old and mostly trash:
* Luften
* Shontuz
* Wandergart
* Paint
* Nebeline

shontuz and luften can be found at glest/softpedia and wandergart at eurion and paint may be on an Italian site but I think the link is dead.

* Freak Forest
Freek, not Freak... I'm pretty sure.
Took me a minute to remember/find it...

What was Paint like? Any SS(s)?

Nebeline. Where?  :|

But yeah, basically that's it...

* Meadow
Well, just not much commotion about it..
