MegaGlest Documentation
« on: 1 May 2010, 11:13:18 »
I am a relatively new user to glest, but I have played for several months. I have modified XML´s and added mods to my game, so I know my way around a bit. I also play on Ubuntu.

I suggest that someone, myself included, should create an actual functioning documentation page for MegaGlest/GAE/Glest.

As far as I can tell, the info is spread across the forums, which are hard to navigate, a semi up-to-date wikia that doesn´t really make it easy to find things, and a couple readme.txt files.

I can create a webpage for the documentation, and post the documentation there, but I myself cannot provide the information necessary.

Although much information can be found in the forums, etc... , the goal of this project would be to consolidate it, remove unnecessary posts, and create an easy to read, beginner friendly webpage.

My opinion:

Get whoever has admin access (I don't really know who does) to the Glest wikia to come forth and solve the following issues with the said Glest wikia:

1. Define the structure for the wikia!!! It's just a bit chaotic now due to nonintegrated edits from different people. Part of this can be blamed on the editors themselves but on the other hand there really is no standardized outline of: What to include, Why to include, Where to include, How to include, When to include. The wikia needs this!
There have been atempts to do this but they were not respected and/or not implemented in common agreement nor even shared knowledge. Only whoever has administrator access to our wikia can actually pull this through (and being its admin isn't even enough, just one mandatory requisite).

2.1. Make point #1 be anounced to the community for discussion.
2,2, Make that discussion lead to a swift but complete and workable (as much as possible agreed) decision.
2.3. Make that decision public both on the forum and on the wikia itself.
2.4. Keep the decision / rules / guidelines / schemas / templates ( policies public on the wikia for everyone to see including future editors who did not take part in the decision process.

3.
 • Enforce the use of and abiding by the said decision / rules / guidelines / schemas / templates through per user editing permissions (to avoid future messups).
 • Keep the permissions updated so the people who are permited to edit actually are people who will edit according to the agreed upon rules.

4. Like in any other project, review all of the above periodically.

Now, about this:
I suggest that someone, myself included, should create an actual functioning documentation page for MegaGlest/GAE/Glest.
If you want to do this for all three engines: Glest, GAE and MegaGlest... WTH did you post this on the MegaGlest specific subforum?!
Sorry to tell you this, but that's just the kind of half-arsed ideas and attitudes that messed up the Wikia entirelly.  >:(

Also, in case you disagree to everything I said and still want to do it as you described, someone already did:
Code: [Select]
Omega's Glest Guide V4It is maintained by omega alone (administrator in the Glest forum in case you didn't know) and is a bit outdated. But still have lots of informations on both Glest and GAE (MegaGlest did not exist yet by the last major update I guess) and includes informations and download links for factions and techectrees, maps, tilesets and scenarios.
Also has a very nice and easy to follow modelling guide, an user's contributed articles section and its own forum.

Thank you for reading. :)

I agree with what you say, however:

When I said MegaGlest/GAE etc.., what I really meant was MegaGlest. Glest (normal) already has sufficient documentation, at least to get beginners started.

BUT: the only way to get current information is to search through the forums, which isn´t really all the efficient

And, this info is also never in beginner friendly terms, you really have to have messed around with glest to understand it.

Omega´s Glest Guide is to outdated.

Ok. How do you fit GAE in there? "Sufficient documentation, at least to get beginners started" as well? Why not have just said "documentation page for Megaglest" period then?  :look:

The most "current" information will always be on the forums, that's where stuff is currently being discussed. :P
It's like the forums are SVN and the Wikia (or whatever) is "standard" release ("pre-alpha, alpha, beta, stable", depending on how often and how completelly it's updated and I'm saying this only metaphorically). ;)

You mean the current information out there is never in beginner friendly terms, did I interpret that correctly?
On the wikia? You can improve it. ;)
On the forums? Depends on who is asking the questions I guess. And anyone who registers (for free) is free to ask so ... :look:

True. But he does intend to update it. What do you think will be faster? An update or a start from scratch?  :look:

I think there are major structural problems with the glest wikia - it contains coding from the old monobook format and the newer monaco code has been cobbled on top of it. Someone with wikia coding experience could probably fix it in a couple hours. The CS formatting is also broken. Martino was the site admin and he just shared the account with other glest team members - check the version histories - he is the original author of many pages.

Glest wikia title pages use improper page naming (poor search engine results) - wikia staff can help resolve this problem.

Anyone with more than a few dozen quality edits can apply for higher level access permissions - just contact Uberfuzzy.

Admin have no special authority over low level users. Format breaks and bizarre redirects are wikia SNAFU.

mrdarvit,

Gather the info and paste it onto a new glest wikia page. Slice, dice and add some headers to the new page. Check the starcraft wikia for format guidelines - how do they present similar information?

Break the new page into digestible segments. No one will help you - but they will complain loudly and ninja edit.

JDA worked on the glest wikia and he whipped the faction page into shape.

Have fun!
