Hey everyone. I am a long time fan of Glest and I thought that there might be some similarity between the Glest community and the community that is slowly developing around Avaneya. Avaneya is a free, commercial, sci-fi game for GNU/Linux currently under active development. I'd like to let you all know about it, and I know the temporary website is not so good, but other constructive feedback is always welcome.

You can read more about it below at the project website. There's also a reasonable FAQ that answers a lot of the most common questions.

https://www.avaneya.com

Take care and enjoy!

Sadly not. Looking at a while.

Did the page render ok in your browser? Before today's fixes, some people were having problems with it.

Yes, but the page was bigger than my monitor so it was hard to read the stuff. Any shots or VIP stuff?

Shitty deal. Can you email me a screenshot of how it came out at your end? If it's too much trouble, no worries. kip at thevertigo dot com.

I'll let you know when svn, screenshots, betas, etc., come out via the announcements mailing list. There should be svn and some design documents going public very soon.

Sorry, haven't been to the site yet, but I was amused by the description of it as a "free, commercial game". If it's free, where does the commercial aspect come in? Not that business models can't exist without selling the users software - but they are rare.

Here is what it looked like, I scaled the pic down a bit so it won't be too big.

Shitty deal. I need to figure out how to get the content to automatically resize for smaller screens. :o

pure HTML elements do it automatically. Unless you've got a forced resolution, the problem is probably your images.

Edit: I just looked at the code using Chrome, which allows you to disable specific elements of the code. The main table, apparently, is told to fix it's width at 1280 - apparently the resolution of the background image. Disabling it allows things to shift, but there are problems with that too. The menu colors are too close to the game-name title so if they overlap at all (the first one did) it'll be hard to read. In addition, exceeding the fixed width also affected the background and made it start to repeat itself - which it will do on wider screens anyway.

example of it in a narrower screen after disabling the "width" part of the table.

See how "Subscribe" is difficult to read?

Sadly I am too ignorant of HTML to know what you mean. If you'd like to send me a diff or replacement of the index.html if you have time, that would be helpful.

Hey Hectate. You've described the problem beautifully. That's exactly it. On widescreen monitors though, like mine at 1920x1200, the background image thankfully doesn't repeat.

For someone who knows HTML / CSS, this is probably a simple problem to fix. Sadly I'm not one of those people.

Hey Omega. Thanks for your help. Take a look at the above. Basically I just want the page to render properly on monitors of various sizes, including the tiny netbook screens. Great forum theme too, by the way.

Hey ultifd. Thanks for checking it out. I was worried that temporary website might not be so good, but happy some people are content with it.

I don't intend to work on it alone. There's actually a lengthy list of people that have requested to become involved. However, the only thing I ask is that people are patient while I finish my technical design documents. That is a good place for the community to start because then everyone will at least know what needs to be done.

Thanks. Tell your friends about it too, if you like. The larger the community, the better the game will be.  :-*

Hey, there's a time for everything. Ubuntu just came out in a new version, Lucid Lynx. The friendly installer can take care of dual booting Windows no problem. And if you don't want to install it, you can take it for a test drive and just boot off the CD and run it off there.

A lot of Linux games use cross-platform software(like Open GL), so they can be ported and compiled for Windows. :) (Like Super Tux Cart!)

I have both Windows and Linux, so I'm happy. :D

I'll check out the site.
