Air Buildings
« on: 11 May 2010, 03:16:09 »
I have a question about this possibility, I've tried to have buildings in the air field, which works, however, regardless of the field I attempt to place workers in, they only start building and refuse to continue, even if I order them to do so.

Is there any kind of potential work around for this?

Don't. Its vastly inferior. I don't use it anymore. Even simply things like not being able to right click to set a building's go-to point just gets me... :P

Viva la GAE!

This isn't exactly on topic but can air units create ground units and once created they drop the units to the ground

I'm pretty sure a unit will always go (immediately, no dropping unless it's animated) to it's set field. Creating a unit (regardless of it's field) should be no different than for any other unit or building. Of course, there's always weird bugs like not being able to repair air units as already noted :D

Sorry Omega. I wasn't trying to imply that it was still broken, just that unexpected bugs pop up from time to time. Who's to say that there isn't a bug that makes it impossible to create a land unit from an air unit? Until I discovered it myself, I thought that repairing air units (in vanilla glest) wasn't a problem. Now that it's no longer a problem, there'll be a new one to show up somewhere.

GAE won't work at school, but thank you for answering my question.

How about somebody actually test it and find out?  It's not that complicated. ::)

While everybody else is debating philosophy about it, I decided to be a good scientist and test it out.  I just changed Magic's Mage Tower to the air field, and it produces ground-based Initiates like always.  The only problem I'm seeing so far is that the Initiates can't return their harvested resources to the flying building.  I'm going to test it again with flying Initiates.  If only my Glest would run at faster than 1 frame per second, this would be a lot easier. *sigh*

Edit: I tested with flying Initiates and flying Mage Tower.  Initiates repaired the Mage Tower just fine.  They also harvested wood successfully, but could not return the resources to the Mage Tower.  They also successfully built and repaired a Summoner's Guild, but would not auto-repair it.  They also returned wood to the Summoner's Guild.  This was on GAE 0.2.13.

this seems like a great place to put this idea:

units that can freely morph between fields (emphasis on the word "free"). ive talked about this before, but it would be nice. it would open opportunities like flying buildings that have to land to build units (think the Terrans from Starcraft, and yes, im talking to the "Glest in Space" guy)
