Question about Background Music.
« on: 17 May 2010, 04:34:10 »
And no, I'm not begging for help.

In actual fact, I'm asking you what you think of these three peices of music I have put together for three different factions in a mod I am making.
The music is NOT composed by me, and is instead composed by my good friend Martin O'Donnel, who makes all the music in the "Halo" franchise. Martin has allowed me to edit several songs from the Halo 1, 2 and 3 Official Sound Tracks to use in my mod as what I call "Backstory Telling" BGM.

Now I'm keeping the most of my project hushhush untill I decide to open up a reveal/wip Topic. But as of now, these three songs are going to be used for three factions. I may make more, but it depends.
(Note: I've been a Music Producer and editor as one of my hobbies for a while now. Suggestions and Crit is gleefully accepted.)

The first song is titled: "Feeble Minded Enemy of Mine"
and this piece is made for the "Bad Guys" in my mod. The Evil side, once Human but possessed by some daemonic force of evil and chaos. The backstory to this piece is that they are essentially too evil to turn back, yet their soul tries hard - You can probably tell when, too. The song is mostly alien/evil sound effects and a general beat, but occasionally there is a burst of violin, trumpet and other instruments making for some kind of "Action" sound - This is where whatever is left of the Human inside this poor, evil faction is trying to surface, but ultimately fails.

The second piece for you to listen to is for the Human faction, titled: "Fight For Your Life", it is to represent the Human faction Preparing, and fighting in a long war against it's enemies.

Note: Remaking the Evil Faction's music.

The music on the download is MP3 Format, so you can hear them in all its glory.
the OGG uses the same quality, and doesn't sound different ingame.

I would tell you but it is too big to download, You should use 7zip. It compresses it way smaller.  :)

Huh? It's only 28 megs..

Ok I'll try 7Zip, that will make uploading to rapidshare faster aswell.

Well I just tried the 7zip,with no difference in size... Oh well I'll upload them anyway
If you do listen, please tell me what you think - I actually have several different ideas waiting to be tried for each faction, so any suggestions are welcome.

The sound is high quality, And each song is roughly 12-15 minutes long...

Not sure what format you used but ogg gives best compression size, avoid WAV in my opinion.

The songs on the download will be MP3, if you managed to read my wall of text.
The OGG is fine, but I made these MP3's so that you can listen to them

Well, you can use smaller bitrate. I'd recommend 128kbs bitrate, which is quite good, or 96kbs bit rate. Both will give you under 1MB/minute.

Well we haven't personally met, but we've been in contact for a time when I opted to be a mission designer for Bungie Studio's, lets just say I didn't get the place, but I've been a great fan of O'Donnell, and yea. Ok then, I'll lower the bitrate and see how it sounds, and upload again.

edit:I updated link, with 160 kbps bitrate version. It's 15megs, and I didn't 7z it because I dont see why, unless your all on dialup! :)

if you have contact with Bungie, tell them that Halo Wars was better than the first games, and that im waiting for the sequel...

also, you said that you were mixing songs and stuff, but do you have any plan on making any yourself?

Halo Wars isn't bungie, Halo Wars is Ensemble Studios/Robot Industries now because Microsh*t closed them.

I might try making music, But I've only ever made techno and electronic rave type music.. I do have some virtual instruments I could make something with, But why? I quite like the Halo music..

oh, sorry about the Bungie/Ensemble mixup...

well, Techno is cool! I have no prob with the Halo music (honestly, i prefered Steven Rippy's Halo music better), and i dont care if you do Halo music. but maybe you could give us some rave?

I dunno how to fit it in though, what with what I want to do.

Ohh, an idea:

Mix the halo with with some kind of beat? Theres a song on the Halo 2 OST Called "Never Surrender" which is that, but its kinda lame.

I gave it a listen, and I'd say it's pretty good.  It's a little hard to judge if the "feel" of it matches the theme of the faction until we see it, though.

Interesting track, I look forward to whatever faction goes along with it.

Its meant to be for the evil faction, looking back on it - I think I could remake it a bit better.

In other news: I made a piece for the Humanity Faction. Basically, the start of the peice is to represent the humans preparing for war, and the rest of the song pretty much is that: war. And thats pretty much the Humans in my mod - Always at war with the evil guys.

Anyways, here it is: "Fight For Your Life", for lack of a better name

I use Rapidshare because Megaupload is all Show and not enough Tell.
Personally, I dont like Rapidshare - but It's free, for now atleast.

My friend commented on my songs, and he said that they should be longer, and he didn't mean a couple minutes - he meant about half an hour longer. I asked him why and he recons it would be better because then the background music wouldn't get so repetetive..

basically the only bad thing about it is that it has ads....  ::)

so almost 40 minutes? hmm...some people might not even get to hear the entire track...  ::)
Well, usually the background music for a mod/or a faction is at most 10m minutes...but I guess it would be ok...  ::)
repetitive?  I think when you are playing a glest game, you won't really care...  ::)

this is for a glest mod, right>  :|

Yea its for a Glest mod.

Well.. Maybe about 20 minutes would provide enough variation for a game, afterall - It IS just background music, albeit special and storytelling - but not many people are really bothered whilst they hack there way through hordes of demons...

Which one?

I've still to make the song for the third faction, but I'm not entirely sure how to go about it - I want there song to be sort of balanced. Not like the humans, with all action and fighting kind of music, and not like the evil side with there scary wierdness..
