blender file format?

Why doesn`t glest use blender file format? would be so much nicer, and blender is open source so you can get all code you need or what?

Simply put, .blend is not a model format.

Yah, the .blend format is for Blender specifically, and Blender is designed to create 3D movies, as well as game models, but the format itself is very bulky considering all the data it has to store.

G3D does suck, but maybe someday we could have an improvement.

the only problem i have with g3d is that animation bones are lost; so "reengineering" is impossible. it has advantages, so that the rendering is very fast(i think) because the vertices bones must'nt be calculated live but for modding thats a huge disatvantage. using an ace/ase-ascii(Max?) similar format could be a step forward and you could use a bit-version by the glest engine. or glest generates the g3ds at runtime while loading..

Just save your .blends and open them if you want to re-engineer them.

I think you completely missed the point of reverse engineering.

No, I didn't I was just saying that is the only way I know of. All model types don't save the rig that I know of.

I think the g3d should be improved in the future to add these abilities:

-Remembering the bones, for importing back to a modelling
-Light

I think that a format that remembers the bones or vertex groups will be necessary for rag-doll physics, which I remember Daniel talking about a long time ago.  It would also be nice if it supported some lighting and Blender-made particles, which would be infinitely more handy when dealing with a moving emitter like a torch.

I'm sure it will be hard for the devs to do this, but it would be awesome to learn Blender particles and have a flaming sword! 8)
