I think this would only be useful for cinematic sequences.  I guess it could be good for "future considerations", but wouldn't do much for us now in my opinion.

eliminator, we have something called wikipedia and the link there have been posted a little earlier in the topic.
Just click on the yellow text that says `sky-box`

I disagree.  Implementing a video player in Glest is only good for people who have the know-how and motivation to make movies.  An in-game cinematic approach (a la Age of Mythology or the beginning of the level scenes in WC3) is much more user-friendly when it comes to content-generation because it doesn't require movie-making skills or egregious rendering times.

i mean that you can actually can see the sky. Most of the times it would be done by a sky box, a large textured orb around the map...

Is it really worth loading a huge texture all the time, if you're only going to see it on rare occasions?  Maybe there could be a "enable/disable skybox" trigger for cinematic camera events.

Ah yes, I suggested this for GAE a long while back. I agree that it would be awesome. I doubt it would need to be a huge file, since I have some experience with sky boxes and they tend to work quite fine with 512x512 sides. Since Glest's camera can easily tilt to see the sky (the sides of it anyway), it would be much better that the current lame black that we currently see.

I must say something about this sky dome. It is worthless. See every pixel on the board uses up memory on the video card and my 1 gig video card already gets pretty choppy by mid game as is. I would not want to use up what little memory to display what a dumb blue sky that doesn't help with game play but uses memory on the video card. And yes blue uses more video memory than black does. If there is ever a vote on this I say no sky dome!!!!

what MJR says is true, even my four gigs can get a little choppy if a game lasts long enough, but for that, what about the ones with like 256MBs?
