a contest!
« on: 27 May 2010, 21:15:00 »
I think I will introduce a contest. I still need to make a desert faction. First, someone coming with a cool concept. This will be the concept for further models. All good models will be used if animated properly!

One thing which is important. THe concept must include the use of Rhino's. Further things are up to the one making up the concept!

I thought it was funny to integrate something with a Rhino:P but ok if u want it to be chewed up before, lets make a Rhino rider as extra strong, but not so fast cavalary. I also had a good Idea, but dunno if u like it, the idea to need to pay ur troops. I need something else than wood, since the desert should not have much more then cactuses:P

thats all I think I can explain before, because I want the community to play an important role in this mod...

I would suggest water as a rare resource in the desert , build oasis's like farms  ;) and a rhino rider sounds interesting i think i might do this contest if someone else enters

First time I read this I thought it said dessert faction. :cheesy:

Sorry dude, I don't want to make a Rhino model, kinda hard to do, provide tons of good concept art, and I'll think about it. ;D

if u dont like the idea of using a rhyno, then ig someone comes with a better idea then the Rhino, please tell me. the desert faction will be released seperately, and a conversion for the story mode will also be made.

I think that the water idea is good! so water will be the rare resource. We must hold in encounter that gold and stone is not rare in a desert, but wood is! so we must make not too much use of wood.

maybe it would be a good idea to make elite units in the faction for example: when tech had the swordman, but not the guard(or as it was called armored swordsman) when you could do the swordsman, you should also  be able to do an elite swordsman, which is aas strong as the guard, but a bit more expensive. would that be a good idea?

sounds good!, there is one thing, the nomads are allready coming up (eliminator and me are working on that(eliminator does the meshes, I do the rest)), so I think it would maybe be a nicer idea to make it like a desert empire, ever heard of Salahadins armies? maybe doin something really strong looking would be great? I just am giving ideas if someona works the concept out very well, I think it would also be great to have berbers...

Saladins armies, that would be a very complicated in modelling and in unit number faction if you do it accurately, I was considering a massive crusader versus muslim techtree but lacking experience I decided to do easier factions. It's an interesting concept, if you go through with it I'll give advice on units but I'm tied up with other projects right now. you could do mongols or huns they also lived in the steppes which is close to the desert, and they were nearly pure cavalry allowing for a very interesting gameplay versus magitech.

MONGOLS like faction! great idea! if you'd like the concept, this would be the concept! so if people agree with this, I think it would be nice to have a mongol like faction...

I would love to have mongols they could have good siege equipment and other then limited foot archers they could be pure cavalry based and their buildings could move(yurts)

sounds cool. but we also need to think about fortification, since they also had that kind of stuff uh?  movable buildings sounds nice. I have a cart model made by archmage also used it for my nomads faction, so packable buildings should just be a morphing thing right? mongols are famous for their leather armors, so that must be a good idea. tell me if anyone else has a good idea

in a summary we have:
- yurts
- cavalary and horse archers
- a cart to pack up buildings
- good leather armor
-

Could I suggest a alteration to the list?

- yurts
- cavalary and horse archers
- a cart to pack up buildings
- good leather armor
- water is the rare resource
- good (mobile) siege equipment
- smokescreens
- good trained cavalary
-Sand storm air unit (some mongol armys were feared to have the ability to conjure sand storms because everytime they fought was during one)
-Striker units (some armys had veteran warriors that hit the enemy first and hard where it hurt, they generally hand a cloth over thier face to prevent sand and blood getting in thier eyes.)

Mangudai, definitely, they were pretty much elite skirmishers meant to draw the enemy out, siege equipment is easy enough since all of its the same, trebuchets, mangonels, battering rams etc, the mongols should rely mainly on mounted archers and light cavalry, they should have some heavy cavalry such as lancers and heavy cavalrymen with maces and spears, they should have a spearman and archer for their few foot troops but otherwise focus on all horsemen, they could have upgrades like composite bows, recurve bows, hardened leather armor and horse mastery. Oh and I remember reading that Tamerlane used war elephants after his indian conquests.
