Dragon faction!
« on: 8 June 2010, 14:31:24 »
Hey everyone, i am new here and i'd like to create a faction :) So how about a dragon faction? I think it would go nicely against tech.
But i'm pretty new at all this stuff, so how about ideas and suggestions?
Here's the tech tree so far :
Units :
Holy dragon : Very powerful and slow dragon, shoots black flames.
Red dragon  : Less powerful dragon and a bit quicker than the holy.
Baby dragon : Acts as a worker, shoots little flames.
Dragon rider : Human riding dragon
Armoured dragon : Dragon with heavy metal armour and high hp, effective against buildings.
Light dragon : Shoots little flames, but very fast and with a wide range.
Buildings :
Dragon nest (base)
Dragon cave, summons heavy units.
Upgrades :
Dragon armour : Enables to create the armoured dragon.
Dragon taming : Allows the dragon rider.

Sounds neat, do you know how to model?

Able to do a few simple models in maya, dunno about dragons, but i could give it a shot ;)
But i suck with almost everything else, so i will probably need contribution :)
I can handle the xmls they are quite simple.

Looks like a great idea ;D ;D, but it will take a lot of work and as the others said, you have to know how to model and dragons are from what I know, hard to model, I might help with modelling but I'm also amateurish in modelling skills, faction suggestions are,
the dragons should be ground based at the beginning to be fair to other factions, then they should get some upgrade, like great wings(not necessarily this name) that allows them to morph between flying and ground, they should also have a combination of skills like melee, tail lashing, biting, etc, and then the dragon type specific projectile attack, like the black flames, fireballs, ice shards etc, which should be ep based but powerful, versus the melee which is powerful and doesn't require ep, Oh and one last thing they should be really expensive.

So it is possible to make them switch from ground to air? Can you tell me how to do that in the xml files?

Not quit sure, it in the xml's, you just give the dragon a morph to ground dragon ability, and it automatically morphs to a dragon on the ground, you will need separate units though, example is, black dragon-->grounded black dragon, I'll be using this for the ww1 mod if possible

Using an upgrade...Like Swordman ---> Guardian. The model changes ( bigger wings ) and can fly.
K that might be a good idea
But maybe not on every unit. It should only be possible to ground it at a few units :)
And maybe dragons without wings? ( cannot fly )

drakes you mean, I think that all of them should be able to land it would be interesting and it would make them flexible in the sense of being able to move from island to island.

Actually, I was thinking that both should be enabled in each form but melee should be better on ground and projectiles in the air, what about a dragon, swooper, it would come down and rip up enemies on the ground and in the air but be unable to breathe fire, and a purely flame launching dragon. the swooper wouldn't be able to land though

About the land air thing you half to have 2 sepret units one for air and 1 for land. (Youl need 3 units if you don't want it to cost resources to morph from land to air.

I think the idea of an entire faction made of dragons really cheapens the mystique of dragonkind.  Dragons are among the mightiest of all creatures in just about every mythology that has them (which is pretty much all of them), and demoting them to common workers and foot-soldiers seems just... wrong. :-\  Now, if you wanted to make the dragons some kind of "master race" in charge of the faction, and use minions for the grunt work.  What I think would be even cooler, though, would be to go a whole different route, where your dragon is your main unit who generates the rest of your faction, and then can upgrade itself as you progress.

What I mean is like, you start with a dragon hatchling and a couple minions (humans or whatever), and as you build up your base, you can promote your dragon hatchling into say... a juvenile dragon, and then a greater dragon, and then a great wyrm, or something like that.  At some point, you could produce more dragons by building a hatchery or something, I guess.

Actually it hopefully won't be just dragons, me and hairy cat will probably have drakes for the poor bloody infantry, and humans for workers and archers, maybe enchanters, buildings are still in question

You can't, unfortunately.  The only "requirements" available are units, upgrades, and resources.
