Gathering volunteers
« on: 10 June 2010, 02:25:48 »
I've been hanging around the Wesnoth forum a bit lately, and they've got a forum devoted to (non-Wesnoth) game development, so I thought about posting a sort of "help wanted" topic for GAE, figuring that some of the many FOSS enthusiasts might be inclined to help.  I'll post it here first to see if anybody has any suggestions to polish it up.  Here's what I have so far:

Quote
Subject: Help wanted - C++ programmers for free RTS

This is a call to all C++ programmers interested in helping with a FOSS gaming project.  I'm sure many of you are at least somewhat familiar with the free, open-source, 3D, real-time strategy game Glest.  In case you're not, I'm including a link and some screenshots below.  What you may not know about is the Glest Advanced Engine currently under development.  This project has already made some great strides in improving the game, such as an improved pathfinder, new lua scripting capabilities, and improved multiplayer, as well as many "under-the-hood" improvements.  The problem is that there is a lot of work to be done and we currently only have a handful of programmers actively working on this project, so I'm looking for a few volunteers to help out.  We could use just about any programmer good with C++, and we especially need someone familiar with graphics coding and OpenGL, and someone good with AI programming.  If you're interested in helping, or just finding out more about the project, you can head on over to the Glest forum and inquire there for more information.

Sounds like a great idea to me!  8) (but I'm not really in the team so... :P )

My suggestions:
  • Expand:
    Quote
such as an improved pathfinder, new lua scripting capabilities, and improved multiplayer, as well as many "under-the-hood" improvements
    to something like:
    Quote
such as an improved pathfinder, new lua scripting capabilities, improved multiplayer and other new gameplay features and enhancements, as well as many "under-the-hood" improvements
  • Post a link to GAE's tickets on sourceforge.net so people can have a quick glimpse at what needs work? http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/glestae/report

I would prefer to have it promote the project rather than ask for help, saying something like, "There's this really good project and we would be happy for more people to become involved whether it is by programming with C++, creating mods, testing or improving documentation, etc."

Yeah, sounds good. While appealing for programmers more directly and specifically might seem a good idea, the sad truth is there is aren't too many out there that would have the free time required to get familiar with the codebase. Of course we are happy to help them along there, as best we can.

Appealing for OpenGL guru's might have some success, unfortunately appealing for AI programmers is only likely to attract interest from 'academic' sources, and while I'm quite interested in the things the propose, the truth is academic Ai and game Ai are completely different worlds.

Thanks for taking the time to evangelise for us John

No problem.  I figure if we layfolk can take care of some of the grunt work, then maybe that'll free up a little time for y'all experts to do your thing.

Unless they are from my university where they teach AI for games.  :P

Thanks John.

I just started playing this game about a month ago. I really enjoy playing it. I was rather disappointed that it didn't have a map editor/maker for mac and that the recent releases haven't been for mac, but maybe one day...
Yeah, we need mac developers. Too bad...

The only thing I didn't like about the actual gameplay is that there are too few upgrades etc (In my opinion) But, I understand that this game is in the making and is being constantly improved. Good luck to the Glest team! :D
I wonder if Telaron means by faction upgrades, probably tech  or magic... hmm...

(Unfortunately I do not know how to program or use blender, so, I can't be of much help. :( )
I heard people went from being a newb at Blender to Pro...some guide, huh?  ::)

So, do we just need somebody who can compile the source on a Mac?  That doesn't seem like it would be too hard to find. :look:

Well...does that mean the GAE team just hasn't looked for somebody to do that? I thought it was just hard to find somebody...  :|

That may be.  I'm sure you've noticed that the vast majority of people on this forum use Windows and/or Linux.  It seems like the only Mac users around are Bruce and his students.  I know he had some success compiling Glest for Mac, so I'd assume it could be done for GAE.

Yeah, I thought about that too, but they are busy.
We could PM them...but he only did if for megaglest though...  ::)  :P
Still, I was talking about other people...mac developers and such...  :|

Re: A Mac versoin.

Coming soon!  My father uses a Mac, I was able to get the game compiled and running last time I was up there, but not with fonts :look: I ran out of time trying to figure that out.

But the recent freetype font stuff has sidestepped that issue, so next time I head up there, we are in business. 0.3 will be available for Mac, releases will probably 'lag' a bit, unless Bruce or someone else who can compile on Mac can help us out.

OK, maybe now you should do the same thing on the Italian version of Wesnoth?  :|
I think they are still hanging around alpha Vanilla Glest...
