integrated irc client for megaglest
« on: 10 June 2010, 13:53:07 »
I thought about it and quickly found this:
http://libircclient.sourceforge.net/index.html

Some question ( for future development of course )

1. do we need a general lobby chat?

2. Is it a good idea in general to integrate irc support in the glest client for the lobby chat, or should we build our own chat system?

3. Is this lib the right one ? ::) Or are there better ones?

1. I think IRC is good for general chatting about Glest.

2. I think if you are going to put the effort in to build a chat system you may as well integrate it into a central lobby within Glest rather than a seperate program.

3. Sorry don't know much about IRC libs  :|

My suggestion would be a Glest widget which sits in your system tray and alerts you whenever a game is logged onto the masterserver  ;D

1: yeah, i think it would make playing online much easier: just log in to glest.net  :P , see who is online, ask for games and so on. just like in good old bnet. maybe the masterserver will even support registering one day? however, imo a good online playing system is the best step to get a playing community, aside to the modding community in this forum. and it would be a shame when so many good mods aren´t played by anybody :)

2: i don´t see a reason why irc should not be used. also, it would be really cool to have the possability to chat in the lobby without the need of running mg the whole time because you could also use a normal irc client. maybe you can turn of some features that are not needed like DCC. i don´t know.

3: didn´t find any that seemed to me to be better.

Cool.  :)

1. Yes, we do, but it is not really a priority..if "Everything" else is OK or done, then sure...
For obvious reasons...  ::)

2. Depends, yeah, as Wciow said...only thing is time, that matters...  ::)

3. Not sure  :|

@wciow:
I didn't want to create a separate irc program! Its meant to be included in glest. So you can chat in the irc in the glest lobby!

For the watch icon: Good idea! This should really be possible, because glest uses a special url to get its infos about servers.
At the moment you can see all available servers here:

http://209.52.70.192:61358/glest/cgi-bin/showServersForGlest.php   ( ups that doesn't work at the moment! Why? )

Well the link seems to be working for me. Did you actually have a game running when you tried it?

It works for you? Coldfusionstorm said his megaglest crashes when he enters the custom game menu from the internet menu and I and silnarm cannot access this page.

It should simply show up with an empty page if there are no servers available

How about activating the IRC client in one of the upcoming releases? I think it should default to on and to auto-connect, but it should also be possible to either disable the chat interface entirely (and have the interface we have now) or to disable auto-connecting to IRC: it can be a matter of privacy, and using the IRC protocol is disallowed by policy in some environments, such as some companies. If those requirements are met, then I consider having an in-game IRC client a nice improvement.

NB: This thread should probably be moved to 'feature requests'.

i have a solution! just use Spring's lobby. that one is so much more convenient. if you want to see the code for it, i will attempt to get it for you.

the reason its so great is because its more than just a battleroom, its an irc, and it has so many cool things in it! (i cant describe them all!)
