My project is up for download now, it's big though around 500megs, extracting to around a gig.
Download time: 35mins to an hour, longer on slower connections.
Extract time: A minute or so.

I'll be uploading an installer for windows later on which should be around the same size.
It's large due to large textures some complex models with a lot of animation frames and a lot of sounds. Reducing all that would make it look crappy after seeing it all nice and glossy lol!
500 MB COMPRESSED!?!?!?

Good god, you must be kidding me... Nobody can download a 500mb mod! :o

Honestly, what project is this to need such insane filesize? No offense, but I for one, am not going to go downloading a 500mb file unless the filesize is completely justified. From the quality of models, in say, magitech, 500MB would be about 400 units.

Interesting:
Filesize of magitech compressed: 41MB
Number of units in magitech: 37
Average filesize per unit: 1.1MB
500MB File at 1.1MB a unit: 455 units
:P

Is that a record? If not it will be...
Well as I said in my other post...it will take at least 1 hour and a half for me.  :| At least.
I can.
Well, this post at least was somewhat on topic...till Omega...  ::) oh well...

Omega: cause the models are HQ...  :-\

Well, going back on topic, should simply retextured/reXMLed "mods" (I don't honestly consider it a mod. I mean, you [abet, poorly] modified someone elses mod...) actually be on here?

I say a big fat NO. Reserve this for mods of at least a certain quality. At least a few new models...

I won't be downloading that. I don't have 5 hours to waste.

Very different in my mod:
Average Model Size: 5MB
Average Texture Size: 3MB
Average Sounds Size: 0.8MB

Along with a load of other stuff like shared unit resources, tilesets, menu changes and one stupidly long music track it all adds up. Models have ~60 frames per model (for each animation that means and each unit has ~4). Then model textures around normally 512x512 to 1024x1024, and the poly count isn't stupidly huge but isn't tiny. Units have a lot of high quality sounds too ranging from 10-30 or more sounds per unit but similar units will share each other sounds. The GUI icons are normally 128x128 too (in case it is redone to use higher resolution images for better quality, etc). Is it worth the file size? Well I think so I love the high quality of it all and though it isn't compulsory, reducing the quality would make a sever difference to the look of the mod, are looks that important, well to me they are but also so is the structure such as the tactics involved.

I'm undecided about whether or not they should be included, but if they are to be included, they should be listed in a separate category.

Elementals= Just retextured...basically. No offense to Arch...Besides, you do know that the download link is not valid...do you check before you add Eliminator? Oh well, but that is just one more reason...  :|

Well, just that it fits what Omega said...
Umm, I have it, but when I try to upload it I can't for some reason.
If anything that I upload that is not a video, and somewhat big, then I get a error when uploading it to mediafire or filefront... anyways, just remove it...for now, or put it like into a different category like John said...  :|

I don't care what happens to Elementals, that mod is far behind me, it's just something I made for fun when I was newer to the forums. ::)

As for mod classification, I think all mods should be included that are downloadable and playable. Classifying the mods into categories like 'Light Mod', 'Major Mod', and 'Mod Packs/Compilations'.........and maybe an 'Other' category would be good in my opinion. :)

Maybe we could have a multi-tier system?  What I'm thinking of is something like this:

  • Gold tier: All original content.  Uses no recycled or Magitech-based models, textures, sounds, icons, etc., and everything is made for the mod from scratch.  Examples: Nihilirian, Dwarves, Solunar whenever I finish it :P
  • Silver tier: Mostly original content.  Uses some recycled or Magitech-based models, textures, sounds, icons, etc., but more than half of everything is made for the mod from scratch.  Examples: Woodsmen, Military, Dark Magic
  • Bronze tier: Some original content.  Uses mostly recycled or Magitech-based models, textures, sounds, icons, etc., and less than half of everything is made for the mod from scratch.  This includes expansions.  Examples: Magitech refit, Invaders, Wyvern's "Mk2" series
  • Lead tier: Little original content.  Uses almost all recycled or Magitech-based models, textures, sounds, icons, etc., and the only modification is usually to textures and/or XMLs.  Examples: Robotech, Winter Men, Elementals
  • WIP: Unfinished but expected to be finished at a later date.  Examples: Amazons, British
  • Abandonware: Unfinished and unlikely to ever be finished.  These are really only good for reference and possibly cannibalizing for resources.  Examples: Science, Machinery, Final Strike, the vast majority of all mod ideas ever posted

The good thing about this is that it isn't based on opinions like a regular ratings system, but rather just objective criteria (are x, y, and z in this mod, yes or no?), so there's not as much room for drama or bias.

Good idea John.  :)

Personally I would classify Dark Magic as Gold. Although it is rough around the edges it uses 99% original content.

By this standard you would also have to classify Titi's megapack as silver, despite being the most highly regarded and rated mod on this site!

I think gold should be 90% new content.

And what about quality? Where will that fit into your system?

I like it though. :)

just to point this out but mk2 will be old factions but the additions will be mostly new, gervoriath will be mostly new as well, second of all its WIP right now, where are elves on that list, and I agree with the system John posted.
