Blender Help - not entirely urgent

I had taken a long break from modeling for glest, and for a long time now I seem to have forgotten how to apply a texture to a model.  I have non idea what I am doing wrong as following the tutorials to the word has not affected things... If someone could just download the file I made, and fix it up so that the texture is applied, rather than the white-black gradient applied now, and also if that person could explain what I was doing wrong, I would be very appreciative.

BTW: Did you click on the mesh, go into edit mode, select all the faces, press (U), and project from view?

Assuming you are exporting to G3D, simply select the model in object mode, in the buttons window, go to material. Create a new material, then go to the textures button of the material screen. Make a new material, change the type to image, and open it. That's all that's needed if you are just exporting to G3D.

You'll also have had to set the UV in the Image/UV window before hand. Normally, if you were using Blender's render for the texture, you'd have to also set the 'Map-To' to UV so it maps the texture correctly.

Thanks for the quick responses.  I am sorry the file could not upload.  I have tried to do everything the Glest Guide says but that is having no effect whatsoever.  I will continue to experiment.

Worked flawlessly for me.  The only thing I can think of that might be wrong with yours is if this path is pointing to the wrong location:


This could happen if you moved your files.  The best way to avoid this is, when you select the path for the targa file, pick the button that says something like "use relative paths".  This way, it doesn't matter where the targa is on your file system, as long as it's in the same relative position (i.e. in the same folder, or maybe two folders up, or whatever).  When you don't use relative paths, it always looks for the texture in the same exact spot (i.e. Desktop/Minion/minion.tga), so if you move the folder somewhere else, it will still be looking in the old spot on your desktop.  Does that make sense?

That won't affect the exporting though john. Only the first part (IM:minion.tga) is used for the G3D. Do make sure you have the entire texture in the exact same folder though, with the name being exactly 'minion.tga'. Also, be sure that RLE compression on the TGA is off (this is usually set when you save it for the first time in GIMP/Paint.net, so just chose save as, and make sure the RSE compression box is NOT ticked.

Yeah, I think you might be right, both of you.  I had a lot of models that had this problem, and it seems that it is like some kind of virus, like if I use a model from the weapons cache it has the problem, or my body mesh, but if I make a model from scratch it works sometimes.  I had a lot of models that were bad and good, and I have had the problem for months now... what caused me to procrastinate was my computer crash, and unfortunately I lost everything.
