How does one install Megaglest from binaries
« on: 15 July 2010, 19:21:51 »
I can find no install instructions whatsoever for Megaglest, Linux version. I have downloaded the binary file, but I have no idea what to do with it. I have tried:

1. Clicking on it.
2. Sudo ./"file name"
3. Sudo sh ./"file name"
4  Hitting my computer

Nothing did anything except for #4, which has made my had hurt.

Please help,

Malfindin

When you say binaries which exact binaries did you download? There is full linux installer and then there is a standalone (manual update). Also which Linux distro anhd 32 or 64 bit?

Thanks

The file is entitled:

Mega-Glest-Installer-3.3.5_i386_linux

With no file extension, and I got it from:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/megaglest/files/current_release/Mega-Glest-Installer-3.3.5_i386_linux/download

Does that help? The question remains what do I do with it now that I have it. Currently, I am confirming Spock's admonition that, "Wanting is sometimes better than having."

You did not answer all of the questions, and we cannot help you until you do.

- What LinuxDistro?
- 32 or 64 bit?

Also.. did you try adding the 'execute' permission to the binary?

Ok right click the installer and select properties.

goto the Permissions tab and check ON the Allow executing file as program checkbox. Then run the Installer.

Well changing it to executable and "run-ing" it worked. I took me an hour to figure out by "run" you meant double click.

Thank you for all your help. The game looks awesome.

Just as an after thought. It is not the Ubuntu way to install an application by download and double click (why I didn't think to do it that way). If us virus free Linux users start to install apps this way, we lose all the super-duper virus immunity that Debian Linux offers. Please try to encourage the use of package management programs and the approved software channels...not download and double-click.

Lets all make an exception for Glest though. Wow, what a cool game.

P.S. This was fastest response time I have ever gotten with posting on a forum. You guys rock.

It's not our job to provide packages for your distribution of choice. There are just too many of them. Complain to your packagers to get it included in your repositories. Here's the wrong place.
