Ew, neither.  And don't we already have a Windows vs. Mac vs. Linux thread?

XP is great.
For vista, yeah. UAC right? and others...
But I think all of us are good enough to not need it...  :| + really annoying, at least it got easier to override in 7.

I know what you mean, but on 7, UAC can easily be turned off. I have win7 and its modded quite a lot, no DEP or UAC at all, plus I have more control than Ubuntu.

Speaking of Ubuntu, I found its even MORE authoritative! I can't access some of the folders despite being the only user and having admin permissions and whatnot. IMO, we should be able to access the entire computer from some setting. I mean, any file. While you wouldn't want newbies trying to open the system folders, its fine for advanced users, and thus a setting to allow so. Its our computer, I would expect to be able to view/use any file, even those hidden ones that give me some stupid error about permissions (in windows, for example, those Program Data folders).

You can access any file you want on Ubuntu.  You just have to do it as root.  It's a bit less convenient, but the easiest way is to put a shortcut somewhere that runs "gksudo nautilus", which will open up your file manager with the freedom to do whatever you want.  Heck, you could delete your entire filesystem if you wanted.  Avoidance of doing just that is why you have to enter a password when you want to do something as root.  You can also log in as root, which allows you to operate unrestricted.  I never bothered to find out how, and most users won't tell you how to do it either (for this and other good reasons).

I'm not too linux savy. I prefer the GUI over the terminal, but I suppose I can learn more... I don't suppose there's a good tutorial on the net somewhere with terminal stuff?

I did try a sudo thing before (not gksudo, that may be the problem), but had no real clue what I was doing... Basically, I want the easiest way to give myself mostly unrestricted access, even if temorarily, but not having to input a password every time I copy a file (that's the first reason I turned off UAC in windows).

[sorry for the OT]
