You're kinda missing the point of this board. ::)  Somebody who doesn't already know a bit about texturing isn't going to know what results are relevant when searching.

Short & very basic tips:

GIMP-Part

Use  different brushes (I have over 3'000 - most of them from http://brusheezy.com) ca. 7 different brushes for one texture is very okay.
Use big textures like 512 x 512
When something have to be detailed use textures from http://cgtextures.com (Actually, don't do that.  See next post. --John.d.h)

Dont be satisfied before you worked minimum 25 min on the texture!
When you use brushes or textures never forget about the license when one of the brushes/textures can be clearly seen in the result!

BLENDER-Part

-> Search for one of the many videos users have posted in this board, this will give you a good start.

If you're doing this for Glest or any other GPL-licensed game, do not use anything from cgtextures.  They cause all kinds of licensing nightmares.  Their textures are free/gratis but not free/libre, and are not compatible with the GPL.  If you plan on releasing your work under CC, GPL, or any other open source license, or mixing it with work from other CC or GPL sources (including Magitech assets and all Glest mods so far), then do not use cgtextures.

Quote from: cgtextures.com > about > license
It is NOT permitted to:
- Sell or distribute any of these textures in an unmodified form, or where the derived product you are selling or distributing is a Texture or a collection of Textures. IN OTHER WORDS: Do not sell or distribute any of these textures (modified or not) by itself or in a texture, material, clipart, website theme or scrapbooking pack!
- Bundle the images with software such as paint programs, 3D programs, photo-kiosk software.
- Reselling the images at 'print on demand' services (mugs, t-shirts, mouse mats, etc)
- selling skins for laptops, phones and other devices, created with images from CGTextures.
- Stockpile images with the goal of making a local copy of all textures on the site.
- Using a special program (spider, leecher) or script to automatically download all Textures on the CGTextures website. Users who try to mass download will be banned from the website automatically.
- Interfere with the security or otherwise abuse, disrupt, place excessive loads on, or attempt to gain unauthorized access to the CGTextures website or any system resources or networks connected to this website.
- Release the Textures or derivative products under Open Source Licences

A good source for free texture photos that you can use freely for any purpose is http://burningwell.org, and you can find some more here.
