Gimp or Photoshop?

Which is better for making textures in?
I already have photoshop and have a basic knowledge of most things in it (at least I think so) But is Gimp any better? I know it is free but I've seen instances before where free software can have some awesome features which are extremely useful.

So which do you prefer?

i personally prefer Gimp, but im not a tex person, so what do i know?

I use gimp, but I don't even have photoshop.

GIMP is preferred around here, as it's what most of us use and therefor what most of us can help you with if you have a problem.  If you were already an advanced Photoshop user, I'd say keep using Photoshop, but if you just know the basics then it would probably be better to switch.  And hey, if you find you don't like GIMP, it didn't cost you anything.

I tried Photoshop once... I didn't find it any better than the GIMP... Of course, first impressions mean little with advanced programs, but I've never had any trouble with the GIMP, aside from its learning curve, which really isn't that different from Photoshop.

I would actually recommend Paint.NET for quick, simple edits, since it's easier to learn and use, while being faster to start up, and the GIMP for the powerful edits where you need lots of features, etc.

I would recommend Photoshop since u already have it. Its awesome! and there are some amazing features which are not available in The GIMP. Like 'Layer Effects' and 'Groups'.

How do you know whats in gimp? did you ever use it? I think it has 'Layer Effects' and maybe even 'Groups'.

uh...yes, i started with The GIMP, and thought it is also a quite powerful tool, i don't think it was meant much for game art. And do u even know what Layer Effects are?

I think I might, can you explain what you mean by Layer Effects?

Each layer can be given any number of effects, for example outer glow and outer shadow which works in real time, so u change the image the shadow changes too! this feature in not present in The GIMP and thats why each time u change the image u have to go to Filters->Lighting Effects->Shadows and the do some tweaking and then get a separate layer for the shadow...quite a tedious process.

Yes but I make 3D / shadows in blender. And what good is that for making textures? Is photoshop free though?

Photoshop is bettr, tried both, can something from both, but photoshop costs.

Hmm... I remember Photoshop cost a lot...more. I think that was around the upgrade price for the old version.

GIMP is pretty nice, pretty good for being free. Photoshop is Photoshop...but the problem with it is usually the price. Kinda like the mac.
You get what you pay for usually. For GIMP, it seems people get a lot more.

I already have photoshop...... and price wasn't an issue as I got it from..... lets say some friends..... chinese friends....

I was just wondering if Gimp had good features for texturing and if it was worth me learning. Guess not   Thanks guys.

You really have an official photoshop version?
A photoshop license costs about 1000$ for the "normal" version and its even more for the extended one!
I can't believe you have it .... beside of this, its more powerful than gimp.

But for making glest textures its more than enough!

Titi, well my brother brought it from a chinese market..... I don't know if you'd call that official haha, but I'm not going to ask any more questions about it  I don't actually know anything about photoshop, except how to use it.
