Zoom out more?
« on: 7 September 2010, 11:39:20 »
Is it just me or is Glest's field of view seemingly restricting? I sometimes find it difficult to manage big towns or battles. I know it could cause lag and other nasty problems, but if any developers could find it in their big, love-filled hearts to implement a more zoomed out camera, that would be pretty cool :)

No way would this be a necessity, and sorry if it seems like I'm demanding. I thank you guys heaps for all the things you do for megaglest!  :-*

It is possible but setting somehting in glest.ini, but:

We decided not to do it, because this restriction is also something that makes glest somehow interisting to play. If this restriction would not exist people would play glest with max zoomed out and just move pixels around. This would skip all the enjoyment when looking at the models and would end up in a completly different gaming experience. I think the SpringRTS have this kind of ultra zoom and for me (personally) this killed the fun playing it.

In MG's multiplayer you cannot override the default zoom, so everyone is forced to play with the same view.  Thats why I suggest to play with the current zoom. But if you really want it I can tell you the switch in the ini.

Other features have a similar problem, for example:

- Map preview in custom menu: It kills the fun discovering an unknown map ( especially if too detailed )

- Autorepairmode and lots of Micromanagement in general: On the one hand very nice, but on the other hand the player is no longer the one who plays the game
Try Megaglest! Improved Engine / New factions / New tilesets / New maps / New scenarios

So I can just edit it in the .ini? Cool, and I do agree that it does give glest a bit of character, but I'm not saying have a ridiculous view. Just enough so it's doesn't get in the way.... Guess it doesn't matter though, I don't play too much online anyway.

I think it would make the game more interesting to play, and being able to make cool mvoies from glest, properly edited ofc.

Yeah, you can just edit it in the ini. I am pretty sure it is the same "settings" as GAE... so copy it from gae's ini I guess. This part, I think.
Code: [Select]
CameraFov=45.00
CameraInvertXAxis=true
CameraInvertYAxis=true
CameraMaxDistance=35.00
CameraMaxYaw=77.50
CameraMinDistance=8.00
CameraMinYaw=20.00

both of these ideas are present in other RTS's, why not Glest?  like with the map preview, all RTS games will show you the map so you can plan accordingly. i feel blind when im playing a new map.

That is...very true. But I guess it could still be implemented...but I guess if it will, it will take more time than other features. Although, the lobby/setup menu will probably very crowded in the future if so...

Yeah. :-/ Maybe it could be optionable per game? But then that would be kinda pointless/just weird in a sense.

why not Glest?
For the reasons titi already posted

Well, usually people view a new map before playing. Or sometimes they don't, they want to have some fun exploring. So if you always feel blind, view the maps. It is easy...
