Low Framerates (win7) SOLVED!
« on: 15 September 2010, 21:31:10 »
Hi everyone,

I am dissapointed to tell you that I am dedicated to my laptop for playing (mega)glest. My PC has extremely low framerates for its settings:
Nvidia 9800gtx  video card running at 800/1250mhz
 core i5 750 quad core @ 2.94 ghz
 2gb ddr3-1600
2x 320 gb wd caviar blue 8mb cache hdds in raid 0
 nvidia 8400gs non oc
When I dont run the game at 640x480 I get tormendous low framerates. I have the newest drivers, and physX acceleration enabled on the 8400
When I run 1600x1200 I get framerates of 2-3 frames when playing with 2
has anyone got an idea what can cause my framerates to be slow?

P.S. Im using win7 x64

Please follow the guidelines posted here: https://forum.megaglest.org/index.php?topic=5332.0

What version of mega-glest are you running and at what point does you fps drop, in menus or while playing? Please give detailed info regarding exact resolution and color settings (16,32 etc) as well as the point in the game that the fps changed from x FPS to x FPS. Also from a dos prompt run the following and paste the output here:

Quote
glest_game.exe --opengl-info

How does normal glest performance on the same hardware?

Thanks

FYI I have two 9800 OC's in the house and both give fps of 500+ in the menus and 80-200 in game. To see fps press the ? key at any time.

Which graphics card do you have now?
Either this 9800GTX or
this 8400GS ?

You talk about both of them and its a huge difference!
8400GS is SLOW and  9800GTX is FAST

So what do you have now?
Best is if you run this in a command window and post the result here:
Quote
glest_game.exe --opengl-info

Maybe you simply have not installed the nvidia drivers? Windows7/Vista comes with a very rudimentary OpenGL 1.4  implementation which is wrapping the OpenGL calls to Direct3d. But this is super slow! SO the best bet its to download drivers from nvidia directly and install them!

That is what I have doneallready yes(nvidia drivers), sorry if not being entirely clear,

I used the megaglest 3.3.4 I think. I'll download the latest one.

I use the 9800gtx as primary card
and have Nvidia Physx acceleration enabled on the 8400gs (the super slow one)

It's only in game and not in the menus. When there are more then 20 units on the screen i Think. So when u have like 4-5 buildings and a few units in ur camp it lags like hell. Dloading now thanx for the help so far, trying the newest megaglest now to make things more clear also for me.

I'll post the result when finished installing

Oh and the pc is homebuild ;)

   OpenGL Max Lights: 8
   OpenGL Max Texture Size: 8192
   OpenGL Max Texture Units: 4

please tell me if I missed something.

Ok which version are you using now? IF 3.3.6 or newer (The 3.3.7 beta1) let us know if the fps problem still exists for you?

yes Im using 3.3.6 and the problem still exists. It also displays a message that I cant do shadow mapping now. And now its also when I push a button in the title screen :S The beta of 3.3.7 is less stable, so if I have a pc that doesnt run glest very well, should I wage to run a less stable version?

MegaGlest 3.3.7 beta2 should be pretty stable. Please try this version and report your findings. Please also report your RAM allocation while the game is running (both on the menu and during a game, after some minutes into the game).
atibox: Ryzen 1800X (8 cores @3.6GHz), 32 GB RAM, MSI Radeon RX 580 Gaming X 8G, PCI subsystem ID [1462:3417], (Radeon RX 580 chipset, POLARIS10) @3440x1440; latest stable Ubuntu release, (open source) radeon (amdgpu) / mesa video driver

You did not seem to be testing on 3.3.7 beta2 then, nor am I able to find your report on how much memory actually gets used by the game. Did I miss it?

OK FOR EVERYONE WITH DUAL GPU!

MY PROBLEM IS SOLVED. HOW TO DO this:

plug in and out your screen cables as glest sometimes selects the wrong gpu. there is no option in the configurator to select which one you'd like to use.

thx fot all ur help:D
