Yes, the particle systems can be attached to skills, as in MG, and also to effects and emanations (just embed the particles XML element in the effect/emantion XML element).

can I just copy the particle files in MG such as smoke_particles.xml into GAE without any code changes?

Yes. Someone already confirmed earlier that the Megapack (from Megaglest, not v4) worked perfectly here.

You have to change the unit's *.xml file to make use of the particle effect (you can look at the Indians' campfire), and you also have to copy the *.bmp files.

I suggest you see the Glest's Guide's article on Megaglest particles (scroll down to Particle Power). Of course, I'm, going to have to update the GAE page soon to include those as well...

Can you tell me how to modify the unit.xml file to support the unit particle effects file?

Just copy the unit xml as well ... and the image the particle XML references.

Or, if you just want everything, create a directory called 'megapack' in your addons directory, and copy the 'tech' directory from megaglest into it, that will give you the complete megapack tech-tree in GAE.

Err.... why do you want to move a single file? You don't seem to have much knowledge on modding Glest (check out the Glest Guide if you desire to learn). If you simply wish to play the megapack, you can do what silnarm mentioned. An alternative way is to use the new and easy addons folder of GAE. First, open megaglest's installation directory, then add the entire 'techs' folder to a zip file. Now copy that zip file to the addons folder located in your personal GAE folder (this should be located in your user name's folder, or whatever. For example, on Windows Vista/7, it's ~/Users/Your Name, or just type your username in the explorer's address bar exactly as displayed).
