Tileset: Imladris Reborn
« on: 12 October 2010, 13:19:44 »
amish13/gAMeboy created the Imladris tileset as a thematic companion to his Elf faction and its probably the most ambitious and creative tileset yet created for Glest. The object list has many new models for trees and branch structures and the new statues/birdbath/hanging gardens were nice additions to the original and standard glest statue and caged object models.

The Imladris surface textures are very well done, but due to the method in which Glest renders tiles, some of the unconventional textures look very odd - not because the tiles are bad - Glest just cant render them in the fashion which was required.

I emailed amish and asked for permission to modify Imladris and he granted the request.

Okay, that's the back-story.

Project: Imladris Reborn

*Modify ground surface/water textures - work is already 70% compete.
*Modify the trees - reduce the scale of the trees by 30% or to a height below where flying units are visually obstructed.
*Modify or replace river objects.
*Modify the old flowers and bush_flower textures.
*Modify statue color(s)

Can someone within the glest community do the tree resizing work? I'd appreciate it greatly. The texturing work isn't a problem, the Ryzom Asset Repository really makes this part of the job easy.

Tree resizing? They're pretty big, I suppose. What do you think they should look like then??

They should look the same only shorter/smaller in overall dimensions?  Currently, air units fly into and through the tall tree models and it just doesn't look right. Not sure how else to describe the problem other than to say its a design error.

It looks like amish reused the same models but associated them with different textures - so maybe it isn't as much remodeling work as it seems? Dunno.

Should take about 15 seconds in Blender.  So easy an Australopithecus can do it.

@titi okay!

Dear Aussies, please don't be mad at me (heh)! That tree happens to be a California eucalyptus - who knows where the cans came from.

ahh, great to see some work happening with this :) i was unable to complete to a number of various reason. if u've read my last email i have allowed u to use it under the Creative Commons license, share alike. the different trees have varying no. of branches etc. so they're not exactly the same model. btw, thanks for the complements :D
a suggestion if anybody is gonna re-do those rocks, a flat plane at the base with a nice decal would make everything look a lot better.

Hmm, gameboy... You've been gone a long time. ;)

Anyway, I played a game in Imladris the other day, see what you mean. But resizing the trees is quite easy really... Though it could use a few more ground textures too, I should think. Problem is the style of the trees, which might not look realistic small (though the overlapping of the trees looks a bit bad).

yeah, busy, busy :P I don't have time for both this and 0AD or i totally would've been doing something here. and i'm really outta touch with the forum so...

Try scaling the model on all three axises not just the Z-axis. it should look okay if its not too drastic.

Imladris is a fantasy tileset -  so why would realism be a problem here?

The new modified ground textures and XML are finished and ready for inspection - uploading the replacements later today.

PS: @GameBoy 0AD is an awesome project - I might use some of the 0AD .ogg sound files for Glest faction sound file upgrades in the near future.

Sounds excellent trappin! Can't wait to see your work. Looking at the screen in the first post (didn't notice it before, sorry) I see you did a fantastic job on the ground textures.

Are you able to resize the trees or do you need someone else to do it for you? I can if you are unable, after all, work for 10 minutes (of which 5 are goofing off and stretching the trees into weird proportions ;)).

Sure. May take a few days, seeing how lazy busy I am. The actual work isn't much, I just have to remember to do it really -grabs the sticky notes-.

How big should they be though? I'm just going to resize them till they fit and look right, and you can judge from there.

Done.

http://www.filefront.com/17430140/models.7z

For size, this is just the models. Move them into the "model" folder of Imladris so that it can find the associated textures.

Thanks for the new trees.

Karningul is the actual Westron name that Tolkien normally anglicizes to Rivendell. Its meaning is equivalent to the English version, and to the Elvish Imladris; a deeply-cut, steep sided valley.

How very odd.... Avast is flagging that one too... But no other mediafire ones, so it's not the host... Very very odd... Could be based on filename or contents, I suppose? Still, try uploading, generic name to something like filefront or any other site... Anyone else test the download yet?

Try here. heh

Ewww... Rapid share... Heh, no clue whether or not the problem continued here, as I couldn't even start the download. It's always "download slots full". It's reasons like that that I hate rapidshare... :(

I appologize for all the trouble you've gone through to try and host a version that I can download...

But, might I again suggest Filefront? There also does happen to be dozens of hosts a million times better than the horrid rapidshare...
