Hi im new and im bringing the italian translation of mg
« on: 14 December 2010, 01:34:37 »
Hi all my name is Marco and im italian. I play megaglest by few months and i really like it, you did a good work guys :D Playing with the settings i noticed that you dont have an italian translation (i feel ok with the english one but why not to add a new one? That may attract more players) so following some suggestions from the MG FAQ i opened notepad++ and i translated megaglest in italian!  :) (btw thanks to a german guy [sorry i dont remember your name!] that i met on the masterserver and that if im not wrong is the one that keeps it up , that told me to translate also the tutorials etc.) I translated from english to italian the following things: the whole game + scenarios + tutorials. Im just checking to see if there are typing errors but at 99% it's all ok, as soon as possible i will send the translation to a developer by mail (as said in the FAQ). I hope you will appreciate my work! I also offer myself as "official maintainer" of the italian translation  :) . Before to end this post i have some questions to ask:

1) What license should i use for my translations? I was thinking to the creative commons by-sa 3.0 but googling i saw that it's not compatible with the gpl license (i dont know what license megaglest uses but i suppose it's the gpl2 or 3) if the cc-by-sa 3.0 is not compatible i would like to use the gdfl 1.3 (that is compatible for sure with others gpl licenses).

2) From the MG FAQ: Please provide information on how you would like to be credited in the next release. that's the problem  :| how can you credit me? I have an idea that would be useful for other translations too. In the page of credits of the game (under the name of the developer of course and even in small  ;) ) would be nice to see an animated string with the names of the translators (please notice that this is just a suggestion, i dont know if it's hard to do or not im not a developer!). To show you what i mean i put here a picture of how it would look: http://img814.imageshack.us/img814/9058/creditsn.png

3) This is a very newbie question sorry  ;D: From what i understood the difference between Megaglest and GAE is that the first improves more the network gaming while the second the single player mode. Why dont you put the two projects together?

Thanks for reading my post and sorry for the length :)

Greetings from Italy.
I translated Megaglest in italian and i keep the translation updated.

Hello Marco,

We've had multiple debates on whether to combine them or not. i, as well as a massive amount of people, am in favor of merging them. yes, it seems stupid to have them separated like that, but it's just the way things are. no matter how much we talk about it, MG and GAE will probably never merge. they are two separate forks, and will stay that way.

but since GAE is going to have a masterserver eventually, and since it promises to eventually do everything that MG does, that kinda counts as a merge. in case you are wondering, i personally am a GAE fan (check it out!).

oh, and welcome to Glest!

That's probably Titus/titi. Yeah, he's one of the devs.

Not sure... I guess you could try this? http://creativecommons.org/choose/?lang=it

Interesting, but I'm not sure too...I guess you should wait for Softcoder or Titi to respond.

I think most of the community wants that, even most of the developers to, but due to multiple reasons, unfortunately they will most likely not merge...(Due to code problems, time problems, time zone issues, their own lives, and other reasons...)  :(

Thanks to you two for the answers :) If a merging is not wanted (or possible or liked or anotherreason) i hope the teams will share the code each other, i really would  like to see glestimals and units able to carry others units (that if i didnt understand wrong are getting developed in GAE) in MG. :)

@zoy: i will check GAE for sure when i have time :) seems an interesting project!

@ultifd: yes i tried one of those licenses (cc-by-sa 3.0 would be good for me http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ ) but googling i found some forums where people had doubts about the compatibility of cc with gpl (until someone doesn't tell me something different i still suppose MG is under gpl) if there are problems the gnu free document license would be ok for me: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/fdl.html .

For the rest of the answers i will wait some devs and thanks again for replying.  :)

Hi, yeah an italian version is welcome!

For the credits:
A lot of work is done to create this game. Many many people are involved in the game development now. We cannot credit all of them inside the game itself. The typical way is to credit yourself in the comment of the file. Beside of this there is an AUTHORS file for the game data which lists who made what.
http://megaglest.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/megaglest/trunk/data/glest_game/docs/AUTHORS?revision=1292&view=markup
Maybe the lang file authors can be included there too, but I would prefer it in the file itself.
Maybe ( just maybe! ) we can setup something so that the authors name is shown side by side with the language while selecting it in the options. A special language entry must be set.

For the license:
It must be the same license like all megaglest data: CC-BY-SA V3

For MG/GAE debates:
As Zoythrus said I think they will not join they are too different now.
I think it will take a very long time( years in my opinion! If ever! ) until GAE will have stable cross platform multiplayer. So this is definitly nothing that will happen soon. And this is the main reason why MG exists!
Beside of this MG is meant as a ready to play game and GAE is an engine yet ( current state ).

for more info read in the forum :)

@titi: thanks for the answers, cc-by-sa v3 it's good for me  ;)

About the credits thing i think everyone that helps (of course in a reasonable way otherwise the list would be 500mt long) should be credited as in almost all softwares (that have translations). In the file you posted i dont see the credits for the translations but for me would be ok also to get a line there under "italian translation". I also like your idea to put the credit of the translator when a language is selected (as i said im not a developer but i think if it's a 10 min thing could be done and would be nice, if it takes half day then forget it i dont want to look as the one that came and made sh*t because of credits). The italian translation is finished and i checked it, btw you are a developer right? So when you want i will send you all the translated files  :)

You don't even need to learn how to mod. Translations are done by just converting a few simple strings of text (ok, more than a few).

You have a string ID on the left, and the translation on the right. So if you open up the english language file, the first line might be:
Code: [Select]
2dArtAndWeb=2D art and webThe part you translate is the part to the right of the equal sign, or the "2D art and web" part. So based on what an online translator tells me, that would end up with:
Code: [Select]
2dArtAndWeb=2 d الفن الويب
(I don't know if the translation is right or not, and don't care, so don't point it out. It's just an example).

BUT... I don't know if glest supports these types of characters... I know one guy wanted to make a chinese translation, but technical restrictions in Glest made it impossible. I'm not Arabic, so I have no clue how their characters are encoded.

@titi i got your personal message and i answered. I sent the files with the italian translation to the addresses you gave me. If there are new files/missing files to translate in italian let me know it and i will translate them! For the credits you already know my name and mail (i also put them in a text file in the 7z with the translated files)  :) Btw i was unsure about to use .zip or .7z and at the end i used .7z. Hope you will appreciate my translation :)

Omega: Translations and in-game text display are currently limited to ISO-8859-1 (that's the case for MG and vanilla Glest, I don't know about GAE),

All: When I wrote the MegaGlest FAQ section about translations and added the hint about stating how you'd like to be credited, all I had in mind was indeed the subversion log. To me, this is a good way of crediting people for their contributions. I think entries in the "Authors" file should indeed be limited to people who contribute functional changes to the software, otherwise the maintenance overhead is just too much...

Well i think that if you do a work you should get credited in the best way you can but of course without going "out of the borders" of the things. I dont think many people look at the "authors file" (i didnt neither untill someone here mentioned it) that's why i suggested the animated string with the names of translators, in my opinion it is a good idea but of course it's my opinion and it will be good also another way to give credits to people that did a work :)
