Computer Issues...
« on: 25 December 2010, 07:57:24 »
Specs:

Dual-core Processor @2.99 GHz
XFX Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5 2.2 TerraFLOPS
530W PSU --850W gaming PSU incoming...
ASRock Motherboard(suspected of causing crashes with previous computer)

We physical switched the two whole computers(case and all), then switched the PSUs of both, switched the windows hard drive to the new main computer. Booted it up, uninstalled 4670 drivers, installed 5870 drivers, reboot. Come up get lots of glitching, different games have different symptoms but none work completely. I reinstalled the OS which fixed a DVD drive issue, but upon installing the latest ATI drivers the problem came up again. Been trying lots of things here...... Random crashes not to often, seemingly unrelated to the graphics card.

Possible problems:
-OS confusion from HDD switch --OS reinstalled

-Faulty motherboard (had random crashed under linux on other computer)

-Not enough power (could explain all the graphical glitches) --Incoming 850 is predicted to satisfy all needs!
500psu is the requirement, though some people say more. We have a 530. Drivers could make use of card and ask for power which isn't there cause graphical faults and glitches.

Current status: No drivers installed, running on hardware stuff, used a driver cleaning program recommended bu Guru3D which hopefully got rid of all drivers. No glitches.

Can anyone help me with this? Gabbe?

Ok so you have a lot of issues?

Ok well, You really have to tell what PSU manufacturer, it may sound weird, but there is this thing called firmware, and maybe, if your firmware is old, and your GPU driver is new then ATIs power saving thing might cause the PSU to deliver too much power, and then when the ATI card doesn`t know how to put it out it randomly goes through the card on all the electrical lines and whatever. Try not to directly download from ATI sites, often such new cards have BETA/ALPHA drivers out. In your case 3rd party drivers may be the best choice. Random crashes, is this BSOD/RSOD (if win vista/7)? Is the motherboard just ASrock motherboard or does it have a number? also what BIOS? I belive you can check on the manufacturers site, and possibly update/flash your BIOS with new firmware. SOrry confusing, but im sooo tired after christmas and can`t really bother write properly :P

I've been working and all issues are down except one.

I play crysis on nice high settings at great res, looks fantastic, then I just randomly crash, temps on the card look fine(54°C max). I've got it underclocked a ton, and that solved the issues with crap all over the screen. I'm not getting BSOD or RSOD. All other games do this too, I've done multiple computer checks, as well as registry cleaning, everything I can think of. :look:

Whatever, the new psu should help things out. :|

Well, underclocking it just makes it a 5850/5830 :P

That would need a double memory clock to match the 5890 2GB :look:
