How do you load mods?

This is going to sound dumb, but how do you 'load' a mod to play it? I want to try some mods but need remedial help at this stage.

That depends wich mod you downloaded, some have installers, others you have to manually move the files. What you want to find is Techtree/faction/ or something whatevre im tired, but someone will definately help you out. Search the forums, have been asked sometimes before.

Well, they kinda should; but that guide is meant for vanilla glest, so most likely in the future we'll create a separate page for that.
Well it's in the MG FAQ page, but later on as I said we'll have a page for everything concerning about how to install mods for MG...

This is the folder where user created maps, tilesets, techtrees, scenarios and tutorials are to be stored. This is the folder where user created content should go meaning game data that does not come with the Mega-Glest install packages. It is very important to keep user data seperate so that users making changes to their user data do not affect their ability to play network games with other players. Each time a network game is played a CRC check is done to ensure all players have the same data so that the game is fair and does not go "out of synch" with each other. User data should use UNIQUE naming and not use duplicate names that are already used in the main Maga-Glest folders. For example the main Mega-Glest folders contain a faction in the megapack techtree called tech. This same techtree and faction combination should NOT be reproduced in the mydata folder.

Thanks. I downloaded the Japan faction and saved the .7z file in the addons folder as per https://docs.megaglest.org/Install_Mods_(GAE), but when I run GAE it doesn't appear to be seeing it.  :'(

Any suggestions anyone?

Some 7z archives won't work with GAE.  Trying taking out the contents and putting it into a zip.

The 7zip file of the Japanese faction isn't compatible with the addons folder (techs needs to be at toplevel). Just unpack it in the addons folder so that you have JapaneseV0.75a as folder in addons and the techs folder right inside of it.

As John.d.h said not all 7z archives work, only non-solid. The mod developers haven't started to provide addons compatible download files except constellus.
