The upgrade went smoothly, simply unpacking the binary and data patches over my linux-x86-64 3.3.7.2 installation.

The engine game is much polished - a marked improvement without me being able to put my finger on exactly what it is.

It was very nice to play in single-player mode.

It would be very cool if ubuntu would push this as a Glest upgrade.

I have Window 7 Premium 64 bit I get a error message that says #2 Could not open file [data/core/menu/textures/line_horizontal.tga]] And it tells me that Megaglest 3.40 beta will close now. I can't seem to find the dump file but this doesn't happen on Megaglest 3.37.2 only on the new beta version. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it two times already. Still the same error message.

Some files are apparently missing from the data upgrade pack, and this is one of them. Please use the full data package for now.

Edit: Actually these files are in both the data upgrade and the full data package, so something must have gone wrong on your end, MRJ...

It would be very cool if ubuntu would push this as a Glest upgrade.

upgrade to glest wouldn't be a good idea because then they would have to decide between MG and GAE. but as an additional package it would make more sense. i guess that would have to be done on the debian-level. the glest-package says it's maintained by the debian-game-team.

The Debian games team is already aware of MegaGlest. And bojo42 of playdeb.net has already built MegaGlest .deb's for previous releases (and will hopefully also do so in the future...).

^ This. I think both forks should be presented in equal light, as the Glest Team has not named any successor.

Bah, my download broke when my internet disconnected... Serves me right for not using a download manager. I'll finish this later on the school internet. Not sure which I'm downloading though... Is it the "Full Data Package" (need a full version, as I seem to have an outdated MG) the correct one to use for windows when I need the entire thing? I would hope so, as the school's net won't let me download exe's, but packages like 7zips are fine.

Just for you the top link now has a 7z for windows :).

You will need the 7z (or self extracting exe) and one of the following data packages:

a) if you have MG 3.3.7.2 then you only need the data-update package

else

b) Get the full data package

School blocks sourceforge?  :O :O :O :O thats really dumb! If they block this, which sides are still open? Only schools intranet?
How should people learn something if one of the most important opensource sites are blocked?

I bet Microsoft.com and Apple.com are accessible and I forgot ... oracle.com  8)
Try Megaglest! Improved Engine / New factions / New tilesets / New maps / New scenarios

sourceforge.net is about sharing code - that's pure communist content, very dangerous!!111 ;)
Also, it could distract pupils off the often much more exciting topics in classes.

Wait, you mean they just started to? Perhaps the filter software that they use was updated...(I think that is what most schools use.) Or maybe just because the site's title includes "download"...just like Glest.org has the word "game"...MG's site is ok I guess, no description for now.

Yeah, sourceforge can be distracting...

So...maybe use a good proxy?  :D

Well, the school is a communist in that sense of the matter. Sites like facebook, runescape, anything with chat or games really, are blocked. Every major proxy is blocked as well, but I subscribe to an email proxy list that frequently creates new proxies (the irony, is that facebook's mobile version is not blocked at all, and *everyone* knows about and uses that). Unfortunately, while a proxy may let me browse files, a proxy to download a 150MB+ file? Nope. Best I know of was this download at work site that supports up to 50MB. It blocks sourceforge because it's a "download site". Now they even block filefront and most hosts (so far, mediafire's escaped their wrath, but that can't last forever).

And it's not new. It was blocked late last year, but I forgot about that. Oddly, microsoft and apple are not blocked, though downloading exe's, even from those sites, is.

If it's not too much to ask, could someone with one of those blazing fast internet connections upload a mediafire version for the poor prosecuted people like me?

Scratch that.  MediaFire doesn't want to cooperate with me today. :-\

All I got was the extractor: http://www.mediafire.com/?ooxsa2a4ca3n76f

Some problems I found in beta2:

- When you leave the custom menu and you are going back to internet menu, you often get freezes which lasts up to about 5 seconds.
- when you have all lots open and wait for players and you have one connected player you often get serious freeze which last up to 5-10 seconds! In very rare cases clients loose connection in this moment.
- I replaced the egypt worker although it was not neccecary :( to fix the selection bug. now it looks bad :( . I have to revert it for next release.

I observed this issue, too. It seems like a LOT of threads need to be closed or that closing threads just takes too long (possibly because there are threads which shouldn't be there in the first place, or should already have timed out?).
