[invalid] 3.4.0 Randomly Closes
« on: 13 February 2011, 00:30:54 »
3.4.0 randomly closes the game. I guess I'll switch back to 3.3.7 until the next version comes out.

That never happened for me, or anyone else too I believe. You'll have to provide more information...
And you do mean 3.3.7.2, right?

I don't have very many details. I downloaded the newest version and replaced 3.3.7.2. About 1/3 of the games will close and will change the resolution. There isn't any error message when it does. Changing the map or factions sometimes works, but I've used the same factions and maps other times and the game runs fine. Also, I have the Linux 32bit version.

It usually closes within a minute or two of playing the game.

Please download the 3.4.0 Linux installer and use it to install to a new directory (below your home directory). Then, next to glest.ini, create a file named glestuser.ini, and add this to it:
Quote
DebugLogFile=debug.log
DebugMode=true

Then run this:
Quote
ulimit -c unlimited
...and start the game and do whatever is needed to reproduce this issue.

The terminal windows may now say something about a "segmentation fault" and that a "core file was created". Please create a file archive using tar with gzip or bzip2 compression (or some other compression format such as those "file-roller" supports) and add this 'core' file (if it was created then it will be in the main MegaGlest directory) and the debug.log file to it. Finally, upload this file archive to some upload site such as http://3.file.am/ or similar and post the download location here.

Please also describe which Linux distribution you use, and which version of it, and post the output of this command:
uname -a; lspci -knn | grep -FA3 VGA

Thanks.

It's late so I'll have to do the first part tomorrow. I have Ubuntu 10.10. And this is what I got when I entered the command:

Please also check /var/log/Xorg.*.log and, more importantly, ~/.xsession-errors for issues, and consider uploading them, too.

Also, please ensure you have deactivated any 3D desktop/window manager extensions while using MegaGlest.

This issue _may_ be related to your nvidia drivers and the twinview / xinerama setting, so please report also whether you are playing on your primary or secondary display, and see if it crashes on your primary display, too.

Have you successfully played other 3D games on your computer, yet?

Please note that while I'm trying to help it is very likely that this is an issue not related to MegaGlest, since so far you are the only one experiencing this. This is a good indication that it is not a bug in MegaGlest. But let us continue for now.

- Maybe you did not only change the MG version ? Did you had driver updates/confiiguration changes like dual screen since you last tried MG?

- Which shadows do you use in MG? Projected? if not try them.

Beside of this I have no clue what can be wrong. I think most of us use ubuntu and have nvidia cards and noone has problems.
Try Megaglest! Improved Engine / New factions / New tilesets / New maps / New scenarios

I tried out the new installation a little bit last night and it hasn't done it yet. Maybe it didn't install right the first time or something, but I haven't used it enough yet to know for sure.

I'm not sure if I have the files. I did what you said and entered the game but then I closed the game because it didn't crash. I entered the terminal command again and it crashed when I went into the game. I didn't get a message about a core file, but some new files were added to the megaglest folder. Here's the link in case it worked. http://url.file.am/?M46Rn

I had the 3d effects turned off. I can play other games like Urban Terror, GAE, and also the previous version of Megaglest.
Sorry if I'm too slow.

Please also check /var/log/Xorg.*.log and, more importantly, ~/.xsession-errors for issues, and consider uploading them, too.

I assume they (or rather the older copies of these files, the ones with appended numbers or .old) do contain some info about what happened.

These are the Xorg.log files I found. http://url.file.am/?pkGcQ  I couldn't find ~/.xsession-errors.

The tilde (~) expands to your home directory, so something like /home/tuninias/.xsession-errors normally. By now, the log file of the relevant log period has likely been overwritten, though, so you would need to trigger this situation again. If you do, please also provide the exact system time by when it occurred.

Aside from this, there is nothing relevant in the /var/log/Xorg.*.log* files you sent.

So I need to recreate the problem for the .xsession-errors file or just for the Xorg.log files?

Let's stop at this point on the forums, it's clearly not a MegaGlest issue. If you like, I can try to help you debug your graphics issues on IRC when I've got some time. Or you can ask in a Ubuntu support chat or forum.
