What this game needs to become a success
« on: 21 February 2011, 16:32:49 »
ok now ive been in the world of mmorpg rts and fps games for about 8 years now and i notice that every thriving game has some sort of a ranking system
bottom line is.. when people play online games they normaly play it for competition.now the game itself is excelent with alot of cool atrubutes but what it is lacking is a way to show is how good a player is
all im saying is that if you create a rank system it will be a huge upgrade on an already good game

Perhaps, but ranking systems are awfully hard to do when you have an open source game, as the exact code used to send ranks would be visible for anyone, making cheating very, very easy.

Yeah, this has been suggested. But there will probably be kinda hard to implement, and then cheating would be another issue. For now, the priority of MG is to stabilize everything though and perhaps start getting ready for the merge.

Regular tournaments observed by a trusted user?
Then maybe the winner can get a forum status of "Gold/silver/bronze master/champion of 2011/2012/2013".

It seems like a good idea, but hard to pull off with the current community (maybe we can get athenewins to go here :P (bigast troll evah XD)).
We would need to get more sized.

We really should focus on getting a more stable, fun, popular game first before we even think about doing something like this.

When Glest 4 is about, that might be a good time for it though ;)

This is a good idea to encourage players and build the community ...

...BUT, since Glest is an open source game it is very easy for players to cheat. There are no centralized servers or army of GMs and anyone can look at and hack the source code. Even with observers there is no way to know for sure that a player is not cheating in some way.

Under the current set up players play for fun and don't worry about cheating since we are a small community and most regular players know each other. Adding rankings will divide the community as accusations of cheating will surely follow with no way to prove or disprove them.

Lets just keep Glest as a fun hobby, there are plenty of other competitive games out there for people who want to get serious!
