In a game, called Rome total war, there are about 20 factions, and i started to wonder, how come i could see who was who, and how did the gauls differ from the turks? Well, what i started to see was custom  banners, with symbols on them. Those of wich also could appear on the minimap i thought.

So, what i suggest is that maybe we here at glest, could implement such a thing as "Banner team colour"? This means that there can be two different purples, but on got a silver eagle symbol in it, and another one has a golden sword. You could then easilly tell the difference between factions. Have a look at the different symbols for different factions in the total war series and you get what im rambling about ;)

How would a purple dot on the minimap be shown different per each purple player? I think custom banners would be ok but can't see it going for unlimited players if that's what your suggestion is. 16 players (the GAE target) is a lot anyway.
But for insane games with around 40 odd players sharing factions/players would be interesting where say 2-4 players can play as the same faction (share the same units and resources), it would mean having to work together else the player's would be fighting over their units but with factions that can expand themselves it would essential be the same as player teams only sharing the same resources and having control over each other's units (some factions in my mod can upgrade and build hamlets which work like the master city build by producing workers and trading resources and can be used to start the faction off somewhere else).

well, one player could get the base running, and go econ; while the other player takes the military. ive seen this work out great in the past.

Yea, faction sharing has a great amount of gameplay, good for having one advanced player take on two beginners too and it can mean having matches with more than 8/16 players.

I agreed faction/tech sharing is loads of fun!, being two to control one faction.
