Third Party Resources

I'm partially making this thread as a way to get a little more involved on the forums, since many of you know I don't frequent them as much.

What this thread is about is a resources (duh), but not just the general ones listed in the tools category.  I want people to list various links or videos that have helped them with their various projects on here.  It can be pretty much anything, from tutorials to programs, just make sure to post a link, as well as a description or story of how this helped you out.

I know I have used many different online resources to help me get better in my digital art as well as art in general.  A site, however, I have used the most would have to be Deviantart.  For those of you who've never heard of it, it's a website where one can showcase and display their artwork, the point of the sit is to have the other users provide feedback and tips so that the artists can get better.  It's also a great resource for many things such as stock images and tutorials on pretty much any kind of art medium imaginable.  here's a few links that I've found particularly useful.

Main Page: http://www.deviantart.com/

Resources: http://browse.deviantart.com/resources/

Stock Images: http://browse.deviantart.com/resources/stockart/

Tutorials: http://browse.deviantart.com/resources/tutorials/

Textures: http://browse.deviantart.com/resources/textures/

Hope you find these links useful, I know I have.  Again, don't hesitate to post, the resource can be a tutorial you found on youtube, or a particular stock image that you have used as a reference, just be sure you include a description.

Please use common sense.  If you're not sure if it's appropriate for this thread, either consult an admin or don't post it.  Just adhere to the Codes of Conduct and you should be fine.  ;D

Using ressources from Deviant Art is a very bad idea in my opinion!
Most of them are not really free, some have only licences mentioned on external websites and so on! If you use theri stuff you will never be able to create something that can be released under the typical glest license cc-by-sa v3.

My strong advice: DON'T USE IT! ( beside the tutorials of course )

Use really free sites like the one I always suggest: http://www.burningwell.org

I agree with Titi on this one.  While some stuff on DeviantArt is CC-licensed, most of it is not.  It's a useful site for inspiration and reference, but not for resources.

Yep, that's the bad thing about deviantart. Or else we would have used some of its smiles too ;)

I have never had a problem with using DeviantArt as a resource, I still maintain that it's a great place for resources.  If you are worried about licenses and whatnot, then don't be afraid to contact the artists.

Most of the people on there are more then happy to let you use their work, and most licenses mentioned are used as a safety precaution to make sure the artists get credit, which I always make sure to give, as well as make sure that people aren't making money off of their work.  Last time I checked, Glest was an open source game, and didn't make any money.

Just make sure you use discretion, which is something everyone should do when looking to use free resources anyways, regardless of the site.

I'll definitely check out your site though, thanks.

...

Also, for those looking for fonts, I have found http://www.dafont.com/ to be a great resource as well, it also tells you whether or not the font your downloading is able to be used for commercial use.

If you use these things and you ignore the licenses your mods will never be free! One day you will get a nice letter from a lawyer who tells you how much you have to pay  :P ...

Beside of this videos from your mod are maybe blocked on youtube ( romans had this problem! ) and lots of other nice features.

... so better don't use it.

So what happened in the romans case?

Was it autodetected by youtube, or reported, or?

Well, audio wise don't use anything that is copyrighted.
Autodetected of course. Every knows that song from that movie...

Titi: I never said that I disregard the licenses, I always contact the person whose content I want to use before using it, If I don't hear from them I don't use it, as should everyone else, especially in a society where there are so many copyrights it does more harm than good.

It's still a wonderful resource to use not only in regard to the tutorials, but in regard to the other resources as well.

BTW, this isn't supposed to be a debate thread, if you're going to post anything PLEASE follow that I have specified in the original post or get out of my thread.

on topic: This tutorial I have used before, it's a great way to learn a few basic lighting effects:

Interesting... The link says 53, but there's really only 47. Most of them won't apply to Glest, but some good tutorials in there anyway.
