Wonderful War Machines
« on: 26 March 2011, 22:50:14 »
Thread dedicated to all military war machines (siege engines, early tanks, interesting warships) both real and fictional, pre-1920. I hope this is an interesting topic and also a good place to harvest unit ideas for Glest.

Since I've been adding "ironclad" and pre-dreadnought battleships to my mod, here are some cool old battleships

The American Civil War had the most unique Ironclads i've seen.
The Confederate ones were like floating steel houses more than boats:

Mini one:

Union one are very low height. Remind me of subs with a turret:

Battle:

The confederates had the first attack submarine:
Code: [Select]
The idea was to sneak up and ram a ship with the explosive at the tip. To bad it sunk herself in the process. Perhaps one of these would be great for imperial mod. A melee water unit. hopefully more successful than this sub.

ah, yes the Monitor was a big influence on my "ironclad" unit although I merged it with later battleship influences. Yes a submarine is on the cards.

There are quite a few other wooden submarine ideas out there - maybe a mix of these and Hanley for Tech/Imperial?

A lot of his drawings of technology and equipment inspired some of the current tech units, like the ornithopter, and my add ons like the tank and possible helicopter.

Nice picture.
I can see from the label the japanese white ship in the front is a Cruiser Matsushima.

It's a WWII tank so not pre-1920 but looks very classical and funny. :O

In fiction, I like Goliath Airship from the 1986 anime "Laputa".

to go along with the anime references, who here has played the Metal Slug games?

like, every boss and enemy is modeled after the big, fantastical, anime vehicles.

one of my favorite examples is the Slug Gunner from MS 5

the t-28 and original panzer 5 were also cool multi turreted tanks, though of dubious value in combat.  :O
The SMK was also cool, but saw very little, if any action in its test trials in the winter war

And here's more beastly tanks though the ratte and monster were never built

a bit more recent but it does look like it's straight out of a computer game like Red Alert, the Soviet Object 279 tank

US type T-28

French type FCM1

French ARL-44. Love the tracks

At modern tanks, I want to cite American M50 Ontos anti-tank vehicle.

When I saw picture of the vehicle first time, it occurs me Guntank.  :O

-Those anti tanks reminds me more of anti air flak cannons.

-I've always felt that GunTanks should have camouflage. The blue red yellow stands out to much. The same can be said for all Mobile Suits.
