Sci-fi / post- modern pack pact?
« on: 9 April 2011, 08:16:52 »
I still haven't finished my current mod (imperial) but I'm planning my next and want to do it in a way that allows combining with other similar themed mods like sorta ancient/mythical ones are in the excellent megapack

So, if you are building a scifi or military type mod with things like tanks, them if you build within certain parameters for cost/strength etc then putting all the mods in a combined pack should be relatively easy afterwards

******Pack rules******
• resources: use standard stone, gold, wood, energy, food. This'll make things easier
• megaglest. Don't include boats or cloaking yet. Let's keep this simple until glest 4 comes out
• themes: there is no single storyline, styles etc up to Modder. However, it has to gel with tanks and stuff- so not medieval or something. My personal influences include tiberian sun and red alert so think whether your factions works with that
• tile sets: start with standard. If anyone wants to work on that then cool

*****unit categories*****

We can discuss parameters:
Cost brackets
Armor type and hp strength limits
Sight and range limits
Mobility limits
Fire power limits

  • worker/harvester
    short ranged infantry
    Support weapons / heavy infantry
    Light vehicles (eg light tank)
    Medium vehicles (eg MBT)
    Heavy tanks
    Artillery
    Air defense units
    Defensive buildings or static units
    Aircraft - air/air
    aircraft - multi-role
    aircraft - recce / unarmed
aircraft - heavy attack / bomber
    buildings

Sound good idea? Say if you are interested in making factions compatible with this framework

This is a good idea  There are already too many mods which are based on just the magitech tree for compatiblity.
Making a new tech tree base for sci-fi is a nice idea, having its own damage/armor multipliers and futuristic resources.

Would love to help but I'm currently wrestling with 3 projects (including a TC!) in my limited modding time!

Well there are already two sci fi mods going, GIS and Constellus. We've tried community projects before, the best that has come out of it is Dark magic.
It's a cool idea and all, but I'd prefer to support something like John's Project Red idea combining factions that already exist together like elves and undead.

I will help you do it a bit, but like Psychedelic_hands said, I don't think it will get done. Lets say we have 5 people on a team. Jim did 5 models and before he uploads them, bam he is gone for like a month and when he gets back he says he lost all his files. Happens a lot.
Get the Vbros': Packs 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5!

Auto-backup to Dropbox :D

This is a nice/great idea, but besides what Hands and Elim said, I'm pretty sure most modders will be busy with their own projects. If not, I think (hopefully) others will help test Glest 4...

I interpreted it not as "let's make a mod together" but rather "let's all agree some ground rules so our mods can play each other fairly".

So I think what he wants to do is a sort of megapack just of scifi mods. Using existing mods out there.

Ex: GIS, Constellus, SST, Mars 2080, etc in one techtree.

The issue I see that the mods are so varied they may not work together. Both game play and art style. MG megapack works cause all factions share similar art style.

Yeah man that's more how I meant. People make your own mods but if we work within basic parameters then you can easily put different factions into a pack. Like if the tank in one mod costs 100 gold and the same in another costs 2345 gold, or some unique resource etc then that doesn't work

im all for this crossover idea, but balancing would be a pain. if we were to do this, there would have to be lots and lots of discussion on how to make it all work. so, when you all are ready to try to put something together, talk to me...
