Actually they cannot, what you see is the fog of war making the map edges look more transitional so the map edge is where you see the units.

Mm, i see, but i guess it shouldn't be so, right? It's not correct to build and walk in the void.

Perhaps the last few cells of the map could be unwalkable....but wait... I count...1..2...3 workers can fit in the black gap? Does it really need 3 tiles to "smooth out" the edges?
