I think it will be useful, cause sometimes you can select your army with peasants (accidentally) and the "Attack" button is disappear + you can't use "A" button. It is very inconvenient thing that really annoys players.
But the main reason is that you can defend your base if your army is not so big as enemy's. In other RTSs it can help you to get out of difficult situation and have a chance to win after that.

This should be easily fixed by being able to deselect all the workers.  I don't know if this functionality is present in MG, but GAE makes it very simple, so look for it after the merge.

Ctrl-double-clicking on one of the workers gives you exactly this already.
It should also be noted that some factions' workers (magic, persian) can actually attack.

Yes, and the AI doesn't use the Initiate in magic well because of this. However, doing some testing in the past, I noticed that if the "worker" unit has an attack option, the AI plays the game entirely different, rarely building and focusing instead on morphing units, while instead, if there is no attack option, it focuses on constructing buildings and producing units. Seems to me this was how they determined whether the AI should play magic or tech style. I could be wrong, just an observation with no looking at the code.

For the Techs quite natural (I think) would be to gather peasants into castle and make them shoot from it using bows. Only then castle could be considered as real castle, no? ;)

AoE2 did that and it worked very well in gameplay.

The aimless workers waiting to be killed at the end game has always seemed somehow unpolished in Glest to me

It could be good for gameplay, but not with the current AI>
