As far as I know faction Magic start without "tower" too.
Maybe they have more troops on start...

Reasons? Close respawns, you don't need to afraid of rush - you can produce more workers and make better economy, because it's easier to defend your base and you need less units for this. But, probably, i just don't know the game so well as you.

It's just part of the gameplay type of things...once you play norsemen and indians, you'll find their units/gameplay is faster than the other factions. Things like that.

I'd say they're balanced fine without a defensive unit anyway. It may help early on against rushing, but rushing is no fun in the first place, and indians balance out with their fast unit creation, while norsemen balance with powerful later units.
