Looks like some images are not displayed:

1) colored/game cursor (os cursor is visible by using the "/" shortcut)
2) Megaglest logo on start up is not seen
3) On selecting a map (in custom scenario), there is no map preview image
4) There is no background in the screen when various game data (such as factions etc) are loaded - only a gray background, progressbar and text appear
5) in the game, there is no image for resources
6) MOST IMPORTANT: there is no image/icon for the commands on selecting a unit (if I move my cursor over the general area where the command menu(?) is supposed to appear, I get hints like "produce worker" or something like that.

I have used this installer: ./MegaGlest-Installer-3.5.0_i386_64_linux.run

Hi, and thanks for your report. I also use Ubuntu 11.04 x86_64, and used the same MG installer to install as you. None of the issues you describe occur for me, though.

Please provide the following information:
* video card: lspci -knn | grep -A3 VGA
* total and available (free) RAM before starting MG: free -m
* CPU(s): cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep 'model name'
* Are you using any non-standard APT repositories? apt-cache policy
* Are you using non-free kernel modules? cat /proc/sys/kernel/tainted, and if so, which?

Additional information:
I was using the previous stable release of megaglest till I moved to 3.5 and everything worked fine there. I uninstalled that version and removed the directory where megaglest was installed just to be sure before installing 3.5.

If I were to make a guess, I would say that some of the *.bmp files are not rendered correctly... I don't know how to debug this or prove it...

Your hardware specs should be fine.

You seem to be running the video card with the open source radeon drivers, not fglrx. Is this correct?

Does the fglrxinfo command give an error message?

Can you confirm that you do not have two GPUs installed?

You have some APT sources installed which provide experimental packages (gnome3 PPA - I hope you had a chance to read the message on top of this page). Maybe there has been an update which causes this to break.

Can you  try with an earlier MG version and see if these things work there?

Since you are running Natty, you may have Desktop 3D effects ('compiz', as required by the 'unity' desktop) enabled by default. Please try switching to a legacy Gnome session (at the login screen) and see if this issue still occurs then.

>> Your hardware specs should be fine.
     OK

>> You seem to be running the video card with the open source radeon drivers, not fglrx. Is this correct?
>> Does the fglrxinfo command give an error message?

Yes. I have not installed the fglrx driver. I have tried that in the past (with version 3.4 of mega glest), but I got a SEGV. Plus there were other issues for running the desktop. So after trying to use it, I removed fglrx (for both 3.4 and 3.5 of mega glest, which also does not work with the fglrx driver installed). At the moment I am using the open source driver which worked fine for 3.4. And seems almost fine for 3.5 as well.

>> Can you confirm that you do not have two GPUs installed?
No, I have got only one GPU. ATI Radeon 5650 HD

>> You have some APT sources installed which provide experimental packages (gnome3 PPA - I hope you had a chance to read the message on top of this page). Maybe there has been an update which causes this to break.
It is unlikely that gnome3 ppa is causing problem (the last update from that ppa is dated before I installed MG 3.5... and since that last update MG 3.4 has been working well... if there is nothing left to try, I guess I will have to purge that ppa and see if that helps... though I doubt that it will help).

>> Can you  try with an earlier MG version and see if these things work there?
I have installed uninstalled and removed megaglest directory and installed MG 3.4 fresh just to answer this question (I just wanted to be absolutely sure). MG 3.4 works fine (I have not changed anything else).

>> Since you are running Natty, you may have Desktop 3D effects ('compiz', as required by the 'unity' desktop) enabled by default. Please try switching to a legacy Gnome session (at the login screen) and see if this issue still occurs then.
I could not run the classic ubuntu desktop (this I know is because of a clash with gnome3's session package). I replaced unity with "metacity --replace" first to try running MG 3.5 and later used the recovery console session and started megaglest from xterm. The behavior in both these attempts is similar to running with compiz.

Thanks for the extensive tests.

This issue may be triggered by different INI settings, such as texture compression being enabled on v3.5.0 but not on v3.4.0. Can you copy the glestuser.ini file of MegaGlest 3.4.0 to ~/.megaglest/ and see if 3.5.0 works then? Alternatively delete ~/.megaglest/ entirely and just start MG 3.5.0 without it (and without using the separate configurator application).

Edit:
While this is off-topic, I'd still like to mention it: You're using an APT repository which pulls in development previews of Adobe Flash player 'square' (which natively supports x86_64). Unfortunately, based on what I looked up, the last release for this preview was Nov 30 2010 (shipping this file:
Code: [Select]
-rw-r--r-- buildmeister/buildmeister 10606256 2010-11-17 01:10 libflashplayer.so
This would seem to be the file the sevenmachines-flash APT repository you have setup keeps fetching for you (you can verify this by inspecting the postinst script contained in this .deb). The latest .deb available for natty on this repository, downloads the flash plugin from the exact same location provided in the Adobe Flash player square release announcement dated Nov 30 2010 (see the Download plug-in for 64-bit Linux (TAR.GZ, 4.1 MB) link on this page).

The release notes for this version mentions that this release includes security updates to overcome the security flaws described in Adobe Security Bulletin APSB10-22. However, this statement, and more importantly its release date, most likely mean that it does not contain security fixes for any of the many, and mostly critical, security vulnerabilities disclosed after this release, which have been covered in four security bulletins (APSB10-26, APSB11-02, APSB11-05, APSB11-07) published after the release of this Flash player square version. Meaning: the version of flashplayer you have installed is most likely vulnerable to all of these critical security issues.

I tried both... no change...
But the glestuser.ini file in 3.4 was empty to start with.

I also tried copying the glest.ini directly to the 3.5 directory from 3.4 ... (though some 1's have become 'true' and some new settings were there, I just gave it a shot) -- no change with this either...

Thank you very much for the heads up on the flashplayer... The only reason I chose 64bit was that it seemed a lot less prone to crashing. I have to give this some thought.

You're welcome.

Coming back to the MG issue... You said:
For completeness: I have removed all PPAs except the one for flash plugin. Still no change.
but did you also ensure / verify that you downgraded all the packages this pulled in back to natty? While, according to the description of the Gnome3 PPA downgrading is not possible/supported, you might still see if you can achieve this using the ppa-purge utility. This utility, however, only works while you have the PPA still installed (so you might need to put the Gnome3-PPA back in place before using ppa-purge to remove it and to downgrade the affected packages). I am, like you, not convinced that this is the cause. Still, it might be. But you should probably try any other options first, since downgrading this can have fatal resullts.

What I can say is that you are, so far, the only one reporting these specific issues, which makes me assume that it is somehow related to your specific hardware / software configuration.

I think what may provide some insight at this point is to have a debug.log from you, as well as the output generated by the --verbose option (to megaglest). So please edit ~/.megaglest/glestuser.ini and ensure it says the following (edit the file as needed):
Code: (~/.megaglest/glestuser.ini) [Select]
DebugMode=true
DebugLogFile=debug.log
then open a terminal window, change into the directory you installed MegaGlest in (this may be as easy as cd ~/megaglest), and run it as:
Code: [Select]
./megaglest --verbose &> ~/.megaglest/verbose.log

Then zip up ~/.megaglest/*.log and make the resulting archive file available to us (upload it somewhere):
Code: [Select]
tar czvf megaglest_debuglog_`date +%s`.tar.gz ~/.megaglest/*.log ~/.megaglest/*.ini

Edit: Corrected DebugLog to DebugLogFile in instructions above.

Here are the log files: http://ubuntuone.com/p/oJR/ . ( I used bz2 compression to save on space)

Slightly off topic:
I have found ppa-purge to be unreliable. Or perhaps I have not given it enough of a chance. In the last few months I have evolved my own method for rolling back files. Using a little bit of shell scripting/gawk etc I build a command line which looks something like "apt-get install package-name1/natty package-name2/natty" . This will force the packages to be synchronized to the natty repository. Some packages may not be in the repository for which errors will be shown, those should be either removed or replaced (I have got used to this by now). Finally to verify, I would check in synaptic if anything is shown in the "Local" section and also if there are broken packages.

Back to the topic:
I am not an expert in game programming or c++ and threading... but I tried grabbing the megaglest.bin in gdb by modifying the "megaglest" shell script and walked through the execution. I tried to track down the game intro rendering (logo , version and url). I don't get to see the logo alone. So the logo being the first (and possibly only) 'texture'  in the vector I got as far as renderQuad function/method. Since I saw things like assertGL() I was wondering if there is some sanity test that can be done to see if the dependencies are all of the right version (but I don't understand why something that works for 3.4 does not work for 3.5).

I just looked over the debug.log and standard output/error log (verbose.log) you provided. By what I can tell there is nothing logged there indicating that any images could not be loaded.
The game logo which should display on the main menu is located at ~/megaglest/data/core/menu/textures/logo.tga - can you verify that you have this file?

I think softcoder needs to look at this one and possibly answer the gdb related questions, I'm afraid this is over my head.

Thanks for sharing your experience with ppa-purge and your alternative procedure.

The logo.tga file is present in the location you mentioned.

The gdb stuff is just my curiosity. If you folks are pressed for time, please ignore that. I was just wondering if there is some library/driver level bug of some sorts which shows up on my hardware (but take this with a grain of salt, I know next to nothing about c++ and absolutely nothing about video drivers and opengl).

EDIT:
I don't know if I should call this a bug anymore... Let me know if I need to do something about the topic title.

I downloaded the source code through the instructions from here: https://docs.megaglest.org/MG/Development

and used the commented out code (from v3.4) instead of the v3.5 code in renderQuad function in renderer.cpp.
Now I see all (I think) the graphics except for the game cursor (which I don't need).

I am not able to tell from all the version information that is printed whether I have a new enough openGL.  Here is the output of "glxinfo":
(click to show/hide)

Here is what ./megaglest --opengl-info gave:
(click to show/hide)

Perhaps now I should see why the game bombs with the fglrx driver...

Edit by Omega: Merged into one post. If less than one hour apart, please edit instead of double posting.

If anyone else is suffering ATI graphics card woes and if you are adventurous enough to try modifying code, this is what I have done for this problem. [If I do a release build, I get a SEGV while running the game... I have to use a debug build...but performance does not appear to be all that bad with shadows disabled etc]. The instructions for download and build are here: https://docs.megaglest.org/MG/Development

Please also have a look at the ATI GPU issues thread and the other threads it links to. I tried to sum up the various issues reported by some ATI GPU users. Specifically, please try the new glestuser.ini option softcoder recently added for ATI GPUs discussed there.

Fear not I'll revert this function to the 3.4 version (as you show above) as the changes done for 3.5. didn't do much anyways to improve it, at least be reverting it will give some people less problems.

svn rev# 2175

Great. For the record: I have now updated to svn rev# 2176 and things work fine as expected. Thank you.

just for completeness:

I had not installed the fglrx driver earlier because, it was giving me SEGV and the problem was that I had not removed the radeon driver before installing the fglrx driver.
If it helps someone, this is the guide I followed. I definitely recommend it.
