Hi,

I just installed the game (I already have it on my Win 7 32-bit laptop and it works great); I've tested the downloaded file using 7-zip's "Test" archive feature and it says no errors.

EDIT: I forgot, I'm running an AMD Athlon 3200+, 2GB RAM, Radeon x1650 AGP graphics card.  I have OpenAL installed; however, I take it MGlest has its own version that it uses.  I have a Sound Blaster Live! using the kx drivers.  More detailed info on that at the end.

When I try to open the game, it says,
Quote
glest_game.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.
When I click for more information, I get the following:

Try running from a dos window like this and paste the results you see in the console:

glest_game.exe --verbose

(run this from the directory mg is installed from a dos window)

Thanks

The correct termage is "command prompt", "command line", or "cmd". It hasn't been a DOS window since 9x (think, 10 years ago). To be more exact:

Open the start menu, choose run and type "cmd".

This will open a window called the command prompt. First you must change to the megaglest folder, so type (quotes ARE necessary or else spaces will cause the command prompt to think it's a separate attribute):
Code: [Select]
cd "c:\Program Files\MegaGlest"
Then run the command as softcoder mentioned.
Code: [Select]
glest_game.exe --verbose

@Omega thanks for the explanation; I fix computers for a living, so I'm aware, but it's nice to see someone who has an awareness of most people's ignorance of computer terminology and technique.

@softcoder thanks for the reply

Anyway, when I add the verbose switch, I get exactly the same error message (same offset, everything).  Does MGlest require Glest to be installed?  I don't have Glest installed, just MegaGlest.

EDIT: And yes I added the verbose switch exactly as you prescribed, from the cmd prompt.  ;)

No MegaGlest does not require Glest to be installed. Are you about to run:

glest_game.exe --help

with no errors? If yes, try to see if its somehow sound related and run with the commandline option:

glest_game.exe --disable-sound

Thanks

glest_game.exe --help returns the same error, with the same offset.

Ok, please download depends from http://www.dependencywalker.com/

Then run depends and drag glest_game.exe into it and post a screenshot here (so we can see any errors)

Thanks

Ok a few questions, the system that fails, what version of Windows is it running (XP, Vista or 7) and 32 or 64 bit? And which service pack level?

Please paste the output when running from a command prompt as mentioned earlier when using --verbose (or was there NO output on the console at all?).

Thanks

OS version, SP level, and processor architecture are in the topic title.

There was NO output from the console, just the dialog stating the program had closed, which I already posted above.

Out of curiosity are you able to run the map editor or the g3d viewer or do they also crash?

Also please try the binary located here and see if it gives the same problem (its a self extracting update and should be run from inside the folder you installed megaglest in).

http://www.soft-haus.com/glest/temp/megaglest3.5.1_i386_win32_bin.exe

Thanks

G3D viewer 1.3.6 - console window opens, program window opens; I haven't tried opening a file.
Map Editor - window opens, but then "encountered a problem" error appears and it closes.

I'll try that update.

EDIT:

Using the update, it still crashes, but with a different offset this time.

EDIT: I believe I have found my problem.  I have problems in another game that I play on this machine, and no problems on my laptop.  If you do a Google search for atioglxx.dll you will find thousands more affected by this.  :(  It's ATI's Open GL driver files for their X1xxx series (and others, if you read the stuff online) series of cards.
