I'm going to let you guys think of why these would be good together.
This idea would be great for the dwarf faction.

In all honesty, I think an underground field is too complex for both controlling and implementing, but I'm game for team-color unit silhouettes. Those have been a feature request since the early days of pre-glest3...

Would it be that difficult? How hard-coded are the fields? Sorry I don't know much about them.
I mean stick a unit g3d underground with teamcolour silhouettes  and it would work fairly well..... It would just need a field of it's own.

I haven't the foggiest how it is in the code, but there's a few other issues besides coding it in. Firstly, if they could just move completely unrestricted underground, it would be unrealistic and terribly unbalanced, so tunnels or something of the like would be needed. I'd imagine those would be very complex.

Have you played Command and Conquer? Starcraft? Thats exactly how they work.
Those games aren't unbalanced ( for the most part) and I think it should be up to the modders to decide whats "realistic".

One very pertinent question is "Would anyone actually use it?"  I think of ways in which it could be cool, but none of them do us any good without implementation/utilization.

I'm actually thinking of a mod right now which would use this heavily.... If it ever got implemented I'd would totally make it....
And I was also thinking of mods like Project red, John, couldn't the Dwarfs have underground units inorder to compensate for not having an Airforce?

I can think of more reasons for this than like, cloaking. And Would this be harder to implement?

An underground layer a nice idea.

Another idea for dwarves that is kind of equiv to an underground layer but perhaps simpler: could the dwarves build tunnel entrances, and then have teleporting between them?

Especially since the dwarfs, which you mentioned earlier, is a final and unlikely to be expanded.

Embarrassing to ask, but what is project red? I know a project green, but nothing about the opposite side of the color spectrum.

While I think it could be interesting, I just can't help but think it would be very complex to implement and/or use.

For an underground field to work, every faction that they fight would need some kind of counter to it, and that's more than I want to get into.  Plus, I think a new targeting zone would need to be added, and I seem to recall someone saying that there were about as many fields/zones as the engine can comfortably manage without exponentially increasing the number of calculations done by the engine.  I see this being quite a lot of work for something that would get very little use. :-\

Just thinking of the selection/targeting problems is enough to turn me off...

To either end of spectrum ;) Green is in the middle with yellow.  I wonder if there is a 'project blue' for the future.

I have to say I think underground units seem a fair bit of effort for not much return  :-\

As for project Red, I was planning on putting the dwarves and undead into a fantasy pack with a new grey elves faction which has been laying half finished for a couple of months (while I concentrate on planning the huge TC mod i will make for G4). Feel free to add them to project Red but they will also be releasing as a fantasy pack sometime this year  ;)

My addons folder sports a tech-tree called 'fantasy' with dwarves, undead and elves... I'm onboard for that TC ;)
