Which mods should I have?
« on: 9 May 2011, 19:15:52 »
Well I downloaded this, the file was quite large. I just hope the game itself won't take up too much room. Not to mention adding on mods, my mom might kill me if I over-load her precious laptop. Is there a certain number of mods that I should have, or is it safe to download/install all of them on a single machine?

I've cut your post off the MegaGlest 3.5.1 release announcement thread since it's a bit off-topic there.

To play multi-player online games all you normally need is the MegaPack which already comes with MegaGlest (and that's why the download is as large as a tiny Linux installer or a bad quality divx movie). Once the game is installed it takes about 650 MB on the hard disk. This is really not much nowadays, since HDDs have become much more affordable in recent years (a 500 GB laptop HDD now sells for as little as USD 45,- on newegg.com).

I didn't get MegaGlest for multiplayer, I wanted it as a solo game. Did I download the wrong game? I really like the look of the mods for MG, so that's why I downloaded the game in the first place.

Also, does this 'MegaPack' include those VBros mods?

You'll be perfectly fine with MegaGlest for single player games, too. It's just that I personally like it for it's cross platform support for network gaming. You may, however, also want to give GAE a shot when it gets released.

Also, does this 'MegaPack' include those VBros mods?

Not in the download you already made, but some of the VBros mods are now available for download from within the 'Game mods' menu.

So, what's the primary difference between MG and the original Glest? What should I expect before I play?

You downloaded the right game.
Megaglest offers many many  hours of fun gameplay just looking at the stuff coming with the game itself.
If after half a year you get bored you might get some of the mods ....
There are a lot of them and only some are in the download center yet ( we are working on it ).
But keep in mind that if you try to install all of the mods you will get a pretty huge installation soon ;-). On the other hand there are several glest/Megaglest modders which worked the last years and there are more and more very good results now!

... and no, the VBROS packs are not included in the megapack

Update: expect a pretty hard AI player !!! You will loose very often when you start to play the game, be very careful with the settings!
Try Megaglest! Improved Engine / New factions / New tilesets / New maps / New scenarios

I hope I have this correct, but with the mods merely being add-ons, can I simply do the follwing?

1. download
2. unzip using either WinRar or 7-zip (I have both)
3. move the extracted folders or files to their appropriate destination folders that are included with the games default folder located on the C: drive

Is this right? I used to have Microsoft Train Simulator, so I've dealt with Add-ons before.

~important~ Okay so I just un-zipped everything that I've downloaded so far. There is a problem. It seems the Imperial Faction's naval unites have the symbol GAE next to them. it's on a preview image of the loading screen. So, this leads me to think I need GAE. Do I? I really don't want to have all these games at once. I just want one game that can use any and all the mods made so far. I love naval warfare, but I'm afraid there's no navy mods for MG. Help?

What about the idea of first playing MegaGlest and then starting to download all kind of mods?
I think you already installed enough data for the next half year ;-D

And about the imperial faction there is one version for GAE and one for MG.
Try Megaglest! Improved Engine / New factions / New tilesets / New maps / New scenarios

Do you have a link, please?

For the Imperial Faction under MG.

I really want that one, badly.

Also, I don't want it to look like I don't like the game as it is, I just love the idea of so many mods for a game of it's size. They all look like quite fun. What I will do though, is only install a few mods for now, and save the rest for a rain day. Like Um, next year perhaps?

Nope, MG has no naval warfare. GAE does though, that's the main reason there are two versions of Imperial.

GAE is also a much much smaller download if you're worried about size.

Okay, again sorry for dual-post, I just looked through my whole folder for the Imperial Faction. I swear I've been gipped. There are zero sea units, all land based. Ignore my former post above, I just need the following:

1. link to the most recent version of GAE
2. link to the Imperial Faction mod for GAE
3. any link to mods for GAE that contain sea units or cannons.
4. in addition to number 3, I need a link to the Japanese Faction Mod that Hagekura made. The link I found didn't work.

Thanks very much if all this ^ can be located. Also, I really apprecuiate the help of this staff, keep up the good work ^^.

{Also, did you call me a fanboy, Archmage? I'm not that hooked yet.}

~I should've just admitted it's not my laptop im concerned for, it's my two flash drives i have. Both total at 4GB, but if you read their true amounts, it's a little under 4GB exact. I need to move all these files I have onto both of them, I just don't want that issue of having to not fit everything. I already have the Glest.exe on one of em. So tell me, can I drop MG and use GAE in its place? cause I have mods, maps, tiles, all that. According to the wiki, certain files can be played only on certain games.~

1. Stable Beta Imperial works with both, to my knowledge.
2. Imperial Topic
3. Imperial --- Military will when GAE 0.4 comes out. --- A couple of the VBros mods have boats, but they don't actually use GAE's water field, they use map tricks and stuff.
(I'm not all that knowledgeable about which mods have boats or not. It's best if you explore for yourself, the mods board is right around the corner.)

I don't know why you're asking me for all these 'links', as you can see, ALL of what you asked for can be found on the forum in the proper places.  ;) Good luck!

You shouldn't have a size problem... MegaGlest provides the best Glest multiplayer experience, but if you don't want to play multiplayer and want to use way less space, you might as well go with GAE because it provides awesome singleplayer, with tons of awesome features. ;) As far as I know GAE can run just about anything made for MG, but MG can't run everything made for GAE. Basically, if you're not interested in multiplayer stick with GAE.

You should try both of the forks, they're awesome. You should also get every single mod too!  :)

Just install it from the mod download center/"game mods" section, that's why it's there.  ;)

Sorry, MG doesn't support water units. The AI of it needs to be improved, anyways.

It would seem then I only need GAE.

In summary, I just want a single, player game that supports water units.

GAE fits that criteria

Thanks for the help guys, it's really nice of you all. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to download a few more things, and install GAE.

Wait a second Archmage, isn't a BETA merely the test of a game that is still in production? I have currently version 0.3.2

I personally don't trust BETAs, never used one and I thought they were for testing. I just want a completed version.

Lastly Archmage, if you didn't want to provide me with links, you didn't have to. I don't wish to be a problem, I just wanted a little help is all. After all, I was polite in asking. Yes, I did forget to say 'please' but I did say thank you in advance. But fine, in the future I'll search for everything myself.

But, they also fix bugs that the "stable" version may have had. I've had no problems with the beta (0.4) and found it works better.

For single player games only, MegaGlest doesn't really offer many advantages over GAE. GAE is best feature wise, MG is best multiplayer wise.

The current release of Military in my signature does have water units, though it will be much improved with the next version, currently under development, though it won't be released until some time after GAE 0.4 because stability is a must.

As far as I know GAE can run just about anything made for MG, but MG can't run everything made for GAE. Basically, if you're not interested in multiplayer stick with GAE.

ok, do i need  the BETA or not? I've downloaded that fix file for GAE 0.3.2 and i'm ready for instillation. but, if i actually need the BETA, do I? My mind is in a twist, and i'm afraid of too many crashes ocurring. eh, nevermind, i'll just play and see what happens.

:O He missed a comma. He means the Military that is linked in my signature (https://docs.megaglest.org/Military). The GAE after that meant it utilized GAE-only features. Annex is a separate mod that will likely be for MegaGlest, but should play fine in GAE. It is not released yet though, but the forum thread can be found here: https://forum.megaglest.org/index.php?topic=6517.0

If you have a question specific to a mod, it's best if you post it in the mod's topic rather than here though.

By the by, is Daz 3d an appropriate program to make characters or buildings for this game? Not that I would, just out of curiosity.
