Like it or link it :-D ?

I don't care any more, there are so many people using facebook without thinking what they do .....
Maybe we should add a facebook link to the MG facebook site like this:

We hate facebook, but if you need it ...
Try Megaglest! Improved Engine / New factions / New tilesets / New maps / New scenarios

Both  :D You do know there's also a lot of people who do know though... ;)

If you embed it, I believe either a facebook icon or a xhtml like box would be good.

I can't tell if you're joking or not... Though, please, no. You can hate facebook personally, but it shouldn't speak for MegaGlest itself. This is better:

If you embed it, I believe either a facebook icon or a xhtml like box would be good.

Yeah either a FB Icon or a like box...
Code: [Select]
<div id="fb-root"></div><script src="http://connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"></script><fb:like-box href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/MegaGlest/201365899904830" width="210" show_faces="false" stream="false" header="false"></fb:like-box>

Embedding a 'Like' box would mean that Facebook gets to know about who (IP address), when, where from and which pages any of our website visitors viewed. I don't think they need to know that nor that they should know this. To not let down those who - for reasons I do not understand - think that Facebook is a good thing, we could put a small Facebook button styled image on megaglest.org and have it link to the Facebook page on MegaGlest. We could possibly do the same for Twitter, replaying the contents of our 'news' page there if it can be automated.

When we link to such services I think we should also point out that we actually think they are bad, or which parts of them are bad. If we decide to do this, too, then such a note should be visible but not get in the users' way.

For Twitter, someone has to negotiate with the German people who took the username already. Same thing for wordpress...
How's 64x64? And where would be the best place to put it? (For the future too, as we'll probably need twitter and youtube icons too...) I think either top or middle right side of the page would be a good spot...or between.

Except you have to click the link for that. People who "like" a page do know (or should) that some browsing information will be sent, though subject to facebook's privacy policy. Don't want Facebook to know this information? Don't click the link. You have to have a facebook account anyway, and in order to have a facebook account, you must have already agreed to their ToS and presumably have read the privacy policy (if you don't read them like 99% of the people do, oh well).

Ugh...Omega is contradicting himself a bit, but I think 99% of Facebook users know the basics which includes the browser info. More or so, at least.  :O An icon is fine...although I wonder if people would like it on the page then.

I'm afraid that's not so. Every website which embeds the Facebook "like" button (in the way Facebooks recommends embedding it) makes every single visitors' web browser setup a connection to Facebooks servers where all of said information can be tracked. I can't prove whether they do track this information, but if they don't they could just provide a much simpler interface which allows for "liking" things with a simple HTTP POST query.

That's why I'm against using a "like" button in the way Facebook recommends it, but I'm fine with just adding a link.

Regarding Twitter, Marius has just kindly passed the accounts' credentials to me. I guess we need to make an RSS feed on the website now (which the current CMS doesn't make too easy :-/ ) and then find out how to get our news into Twitter in an automated way. If anyone feels like taking on this I'd be happy to support getting this started.

Edit: Possibly RSS can also be used for getting news into Facebook. Anyone feels like exploring this?
