The game should display a warning window in the multi player related menus when you enter such a menu with no individual player name set (i.e. player name is still "newbie". This message should explain that the player name can be set by returning to the main menu, followed by a click on 'options'.

For now it should just be part of the masterserver text...as I have said many times on IRC.

I don't recall having seen you say this, but then IRC is not good for tracking change requests. This single post to the forum helped.

But I still consider this to be a worthy and needed feature. Since the big difference will be localisation: many MG players do not understand english at all, but these warnings windows can get translated.

You really think thats a good idea? I mean all new peole typically show up as "newbie" and you know who you are talking to :) .
Its something where you can start talking to the people and by this not really bad. OK its annoying for us to always tell them how to change it, but its a good start of a conversation. And conversation is needed to setup a (fun) game.
Try Megaglest! Improved Engine / New factions / New tilesets / New maps / New scenarios

I don't think people need to be named newbie for us to have a conversation with them, at least for me.
Just put a reminder with the masterserver text, for now.

I'm with Ultifd, just a master server text, along with quick instructions on how to change it, is sufficient. If they really want to be called "newby", .

There are two problems with this suggestion:
1. there is a size constraint on the announcement text loaded from the masterserver and space is already short sometimes
2. This message will always be english only, never localized.

Well, what if it is done locally, sort of like how your request is, but instead of asking them to set a name, just mention in the chat window how to do it?
