You basically have two options, the icons would be:
1.) Placed above "Links"
2.) Placed below "Friends" (Latest Servers would be moved to the right side)
http://megaglest.org/
Which one would you choose? Why?
So far, the icons would include/link to: Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and ModDB

Placed above links is the most aesthetically pleasing way to do it! :D

I think it depends on how much importance you want to give them. More important things should be on top, with less important on bottom.

In my opinion, when someone visits megaglest.org, they are more interested in finding out about game (FAQ, wiki, Tech Tree, Factions List etc.) than looking for social media accounts, so these buttons should go below Friends.

While that would generally be true, it's far more aesthetically pleasing above links, and, as any salesman will tell you, looks are half the work. In order to get someone to download it, the site must be polished and attractive.

Does MegaGlest have an official twitter account yet? I'm thinking it could be interesting. I never use Twitter, nor plan to, but think for those who do, it fits the well with the "mini-biography" style of writing, as new features could be announced in short with links to forum threads. Also, MegaGlest doesn't have an official youtube account yet, to my knowledge, unless you want to link to a search query for "MegaGlest".

Yes, MG does have a twitter. That's why I listed it. :)
Youtube account would link to mines. It's mostly MG videos anyways, until my resolution is OK with GAE. All the same.

I don't think the difference (if there is any), would be big enough to have any negative impact on user's decision to try the game, but then again, I always prefer functionality over aesthetics so, I am obviously biased.

What about identi.ca? No love for the favorite micoblogging site of FSF and open-source lovers? :(

There's been no activity on this topic lately so I'm removing the sticky bit.

Do you realize that by posting this, you just made activity? -- Omega

I say place it below friends because that seems to be where I'd go looking for them, based on where I'm used to seeing them on other sites.

Anyways, how about size? It's either 48x48, or 32x32. I guess tomreyn and titi are not changing their mind anyways.
These are the icons I think we should use:

I was wondering, too. But since none of those who said they wanted it seemed to be doing anything to actually make it happen, this just didn't take place. That's also why I unpinned this topic and pointed out that there was lack of activity.

As I told you (ultifd) on IRC this can't happen before all the ingredients we need have been provided. For example, we need images which are available for reuse under liberal licensing terms and in the right formats et. See also this related thread. My position is still the same: I'm okay with setting this up (adding locally hosted icons in the sizes we discussed and web links and an extra block to the templates), but I won't actively work towards preparing this so others will have to do it. So far, nobody has.

I'd also like to point out that this poll seemed superfluous to me since it was discussing options which ultifd and titi, and ultifd and I, had already ruled out on IRC.

Finally, I do not like to spend time on rediscussing things which have been previously discussed to length and where a compromise which worked for everyone had been found, so please do not take reviving this thread as an opportunity to do so.

I don't think those were your exact words, and I can't even find one icon that is under those terms.

Well, we didn't actually take a lot of time to discuss about it. We've spent a lot more time on other things...

I must agree with Ultifd on this one. I'm still rather confused on what the issue is here, but volunteer both my web design and image editing skills should they be needed. What even is the issue, here, though?

Any free content images/artwork would work. Fair use is not sufficient. The Wikimedia Commons upload form could help you decide whether what you have in mind is suitable or not. Content found on Wikimedia Commons should be suitable.

We need good looking images which are all the same file format (preferrably JPEG or PNG), are optimized to small file sizes, have all the same dimensions of no more than 32x32 pixels. A proof of them being free content should be provided (web link to their origin web page which states so is sufficent). We also need, for each of these images, the location where they are to link to.

I only looked at the first one which states it is "free for non-commercial use", which means it is not free content.

Maybe this overview is more suitable for your license clearing needs.

Oh, that kind of free. Well, I found these nice icons that were under a "freeware" license. I think the designer meant just free w/ no restrictions, as he let some commercial companies use them too. Anyways, hopefully these should work. Apparently they don't have direct links to the images though...so what do we do?
http://findicons.com/icon/236350/facebook
http://findicons.com/icon/236319/twitter
http://findicons.com/icon/236362/youtube

As for the ModDB icon, no license was stated on that page...and its the only ModDB icon. :P
