Tower Model
« on: 26 May 2011, 23:49:25 »
I don't really know where to post but I'd like to show you my current work.

It's a tower model. I don't have a mod for it, yet. If you would like to use it, feel free to ask. I will publish it under public domain when I got some more models and a bit better texture this is only "free for noncomercial use".

You really should give it an official license. Instead of public domain, use CC0, which is the equivalent of public domain, but defines it properly, CC-BY-SA (recommended), which means they can do whatever they want as long as they credit you and redistribute it under a similar license, or, as you are closest to now, CC-BY-NC-SA, which is the same as CC-BY-SA, but cannot be used commercially. However, this tends to just stop indy programmers, etc, not big corporations, which would never use share-alike anyway.

Please read this thread about licensing for more information. Without an understandable license, it's impossible for modders to use a file.

Well,
1.  I personally don't really like CC-0.
I prefer the way public domain is used in Wikipedia:
(click to show/hide)

2. Why should I release content under the CC-BY-SA license??? CC-BY-SA forces other users to publish the media files under CC-BY-SA, too. So other user can use the media only in CC-BY-SA projects. This has in MY eyes nothing to do with freedom, what should be the aim of "FreeMedia". CC-BY is much better, but forces to name the Author, what might be not wished by some users. PD (or in worsed case CC0) leave the freedom to use the media file how it's needed. If someone needs it for a CC-BY-SA project he easily include it to his project and list the original author in the credits list. But if you want to use a CC-BY-SA media file in any other project, that project has to be /become CC-BY-SA, too. And btw CC-BY-NC-SA is even worse in view of freedom.

3. I have not written a licensing text, because I have not licensed it yet. If the way I see PD is not OK for this community I would not mind to release it both: PD and CC-BY

CC-By-SA is my favorite because it basically says I'm interested in sharing with those who are also interested in sharing.  If somebody wants to be selfish, then they can make their own content.  It's all a personal choice, though, so use what you like.

CC-BY-SA does also mean I'm not supporting real freedom, because I want to see my Name on all modifications.

But as you mentioned, it's a very personal choice

PS: I also like to see my name but only on things I made myself ;-)

If you don't do that then someone will grab your model and say: Look at the cool model I made!

And what is the matter of that? I will allways have my source files. So noone can forbite me to use my own media and when others need to cheat, it's their Problem and not mine.

I will publish it <snip> when I got some more models and a bit better texture

How about uploading it to github now, and doing your models in the public gaze from the beginning?

If nothing else, its an excellent backup solution!

We will always have our own different opinions about which license is best...

Why not just submit it at opengameart? After all it's only one model and etc.

Will submit it at opengameart, when it's done (I actually have not all licenses for the texture, needed to publish). About Github ... is it not for sourcecode?

Github is for a lot of things.  I have one of my Glest mods there already.  There's not really a point in using it for one or two pieces of art, but it works well for an entire faction or several.

GitHub is only free for open source ... and so far I see a g3d model is not opensource

New Texture is done.

It lacks... personality.  Simple isn't always bad, but there's just not much to it in this case.  I suggest adding some details to the model, either by making the tower itself have more stuff, or by adding props and stuff to go along with it -- rocks, vines, crates, whatever your imagination comes up with.

Yes, it is very simple, but what should I change? Remoddeling each single stone (without bumpmap) would lead to a very-high-poly model. Furthermore if I add some plants or stones they would not fit very well to more than a maximum two tilesets. I dislike a boring flag on top. What else could be added to the tower, without crossing some other possibilities in useage out?

I rather like it.

Bumpmaps would of course be nice.

I feel it needs a more defined edge between roof and wall - which can be as simple as a darl line, or perhaps the roof extends slightly over the wall and even has a nice large prongs on it?

Very big improvement!

Suggestions:
*Change the shape of the top of the tower, if I were in a room with walls like that I'd be a little nervous  :scared:.
*Add some moss/vines up the side.
*A couple of flags some where? I love the material effect on some of the magitech models.
*Add rocks/bushes/guards equipment at the base of the tower. ( I've been doing this to a few of my models and I'm thinking it's looking kinda cool)

I'm interested in you much you can improve your skills on this one model. So far you've done an excellent job in doing so. Keep it up man!

You could paint some vines on the wall texture.  And then....

Create multiple copies of the same tower, each with slightly different vines.  MG can now select between multiple models for a unit at random...

I think not a different model per unit, but multiple models per skill, like different fight animations
