Community awards?
« on: 26 August 2011, 11:57:20 »
I'd like to see some sort of community recognition for certain mods that stand out above the rest. I mean ones like Japanese and annex. No one should be offended by mods of that calibre being put up on a podium, setting the standards all modders should aspire to.

Not sure how it should work, maybe a hall of fame. Minimum criteria might be:
Released in playable form (say at least beta)
Lots of original content
Push the boundaries of what's been done
Be of a very high standard overall

Inclusion should be extremely limited, the standards high and no one should whine that their mod hasn't reached the status

Take a look back over some of the old community award/mod rating threads. All it ever led to was a lot of arguing about which mod was best and how exactly the mods should be judged.

I don't think this is a bad idea in principle but it didn't work very well last time since most players/posters here are also modders and naturally have a vested interest in their mod  :swordman:

We tried it before, didn't really work well, for the reasons Wciow stated as well.s

it just needs rules and governance. Something like:

1. The GLEST MODDING Hall Of Fame exists to recognize excellence in the field of modding Glest open source RTS computer game.
2. Glest is defined as, without preference, Glest, MegaGlest and Glest Advanced Engine (GAE).
3. Modding, for the purposes of the Hall of Fame, is defined as creating new factions for the game. Maps, tile sets and modifying existing (/other people's) factions is not deemed appropriate for this accolade unless accompanied by a new faction(s)
4. The Hall Of Fame will admit no more than 5 mods during its first round
5. Thereafter the Hall Of Fame will admit no more than 1 new mod per month
6. Being in the Hall Of fame is an absolute measure. A mod either IS in the Hall Of Fame, or it is NOT. No\t rankings are applied.
7. To enter into the Hall Of Fame a mod must be nominated in the Hall Of Fame thread by someone other than the modder
8. A governance board will be established, to vet nominations based on the extent and quality of the mod
9. If there are more than one mod in the running during any round, then it can be opened up to voting as the board sees fit. This vote may be internal or public at their discretion
10. Standards are high. If the board does not receive nominations, or judges than none are valid, then it can elect not to admit any new mods to the Hall of Fame during that month
11. There is no appeal or complaints process. Decisions of the board are final
12. Mods including multiple factions will be treated as a single mod, unless the addition of a faction is sufficiently awesome to justify consideration on its own

Why was a post deleted here? Are we determined to discourage newer members by petty moderating????

If this idea was adopted I'd nominate annex beta. It has great everything, and is original and changes the pace at which the game is played.

Japanese also, but since the next release promises to be even more awesome, I'd wait. Same for dinosaurs, of all the vbros ones, that's the most sophisticated in my mind.

Watch what you say. If you consider deleting a spammer's generic useless message, to be discouraging to newer (human) members, you have issues.

I must agree with Wciow. We've tried this at least twice in the past, and it didn't last. Not only was it forgotten about by the second month, but it's very difficult to get a group of users to unanimously agree to picking a single mod neutrally, particularly when most have their own mods and many would have engine preferences. While I think it's great to honor mods and agree that Annex is top-quality, I just dunno about the whole concept a "governance board" placing mods into a hypothetical "hall of fame".

I agree with Omega and Wciow. People could do their personal top 5 or 10 favorites and why instead (like mini reviews). This would give community recognition without the problems of consensus.

For example, there could be a Mr War's Top 5 Mods of 2011.

i beg your pardon, why should I "watch what I say"? The post that im referring to said they like Japanese mod.

I've noticed other posts being deleted recently, is someone with moderating rights going off on a trigger happy ego trip perhaps?

Although I think Omega and other moderators admin this board well overall, I also wonder why the post had to be deleted. :'( The post didn't look like spammer's one.

As for the community awards thing, I think it would be great but.... there is a thing called personal opinion, and I can see this raise more conflict   :|.

He did have one post... It could have been a spammer or a member who want to voice his opinions twice.

I'm not choosing sides here, I'm just trying to resolve some conflict, but.... Dude, please stop trying to pick a fight with Omega.
If you look at that guys profile it links to some kind of arabic gambling website... Now I don't know if he was a bot for sure; but you must admit, that's at least enough to araise suspicion.
Ah, that makes sense to me.

He did have one post... It could have been a spammer or a member who want to voice his opinions twice.
If the post was deleted simply because he did only have one post, almost every new members would be putted out of the board. :O
