A while ago I had planned to list, on http://megaglest.org/download.html, any community contributed or third party builds we have become aware of. So far, I've not followed up on this, but I haven't forgotten about it and still want to see and possibly make it happen - but your support is needed!

What are 'community contributed / third party builds'?
These should be any 'inofficial' builds, meaning any builds which differ from the builds directly provided by the the two main developers, titi and softcoder and are not hosted in locations we manage/control. For example, any Linux distributions' (or externally managed add-on repository) packages, any *BSD or OS X builds match these criteria.

How can I help?
We need to gather some information for every such build / package, so that we can publish a list on megaglest.org. Since there are a lot of such builds out there, it would take a single person a lot of time to collect all the information we need on all of them. This is where you can help: Please search the web and publish the information you have been able to find on any such builds.

Where is this list?
Right here: http://wiki.megaglest.org/Third_party_builds

When will this list be published on megaglest.org?
As soon as it at least covers all the information on the major operating systems and distributions.

Thanks for your help!

I have been working on a Gentoo ebuild for MegaGlest. There is an open bug at https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=340343 and users can check the post every now and then for updates. I also have my own ebuild overlay at https://github.com/PaddyMac/overlay which has an up-to-date ebuild available. Currently, the ebuild is experimental, but I have tested it on 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, and the only issues I have yet to resolve are compilation failures when enabling a debug build, static libraries, or external miniupnpc or libircclient libraries. But a standard release build works great for the game, editor, viewer, and configurator. Once it is considered stable enough, it should be available in sunrise, flora, gamerlay, or mainline portage.

Edit: The Gentoo ebuild has greatly improved since last September. The aforementioned issues have been resolved. I'd appreciate feedback from any Gentoo MegaGlest players.

just FYI

i do not use PC-BSD/FreeBSD any longer. I will continue to maintain the MegaGlest FreeBSD port, but if an active FreeBSD user is interested in maintaining the MegaGlest port, just send me an e-mail. You can take it over.

As an update on this, thanks to titi|son's take on this we now have instructions on how to install Linux distribution packages at http://megaglest.org/linux-packages.html (the download page links there if you're on Linux). For now, packages for Ubuntu, Debian and openSUSE are listed there. I'm hopeful we'll be able to add Fedora instructions, too, soon.

Turns out the location of the wiki page has magically changed, so I've updated the URL in the first post above to point to https://docs.megaglest.org/MG/Third_party_builds

Hmm? The page was moved almost a year ago from "3rdPartyBuilds" to "Third party builds" as per the style guide. The old page functions as a hard redirect to the proper title, and old links are not broken. So no, not magic, just me meddling.

Thanks for your feedback. The old URL was pointing to https://docs.megaglest.org/MG/ThirdPartyBuilds and there was no redirection in place, or none that worked on the web browser I used (Firefox 13 at that time).

Oh, strange, that page has never existed. Just a wrong link, perhaps?

Oh right the original link was to 3rdPartyBuilds, not ThirdPartyBuilds.
