FPS discussion
« on: 1 November 2011, 17:49:57 »
current svn (2736) at  least for me has less fps than 3.5.2 had and tomreyn reported some serious frame drops when using the tileset dark forest or similar. Lets use theis thread to iron out these problems

Some major things which are new are:
1- new terrain render system
2- new font system

Here is one test from me showing some trees without fog of war:

v3.5.2:
tileset desert: 128 fps
tileset dark forest: 100 fps

svn(2736):
tileset desert: 97 fps
tileset dark forest: 74 fps

Try Megaglest! Improved Engine / New factions / New tilesets / New maps / New scenarios

If there's a windows compiled copy of the svn I can run some tests.

For us laptop users, the FPS drops when not plugged in (typical settings), so those sorts of macro factors are worth watching for. Not saying you are mistaken, just saying ;D

That would depend entirely on the power configuration, though. For example, I have two custom power plans, one which forces even batteries to max out, and one which is the opposite. Each has their uses, and the defaults vary by computer, as well (I've seen an HP laptop that came with a modified "HP recommended" default power plan, for example).

And I know you won't follow it, but I'll just post the link here for others, anyway. https://docs.megaglest.org/MG/Windows_Compiling

Here is one test from me showing some trees without fog of war:

v3.5.2:

svn(2736):
tileset desert: 97 fps
tileset dark forest: 74 fps

So the tileset seems to make a difference for you, too, both on the old and new version.

For reference, here's what I had to say about it:
Quote
FPS decreases massively from 25 to 5 FPS when camera is above forest with tilesets Meadow and Dark Forest; this happens on both current subversion revisions as well as on 3.5.2, and I'm not sure whether it only happens since I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 or whether it has always been an issue with my or any GPU. It needs to be tested on other systems, i.e.: please help!

The overall FPS has sligtly improved for me from 3.5.2 to 3.5.3-dev last time I checked. I may have another look at this these days and update this post accordingly.
