Few publicity suggestions
« on: 13 July 2005, 18:15:39 »
This is a great freeware game/engine and probably best on the net. I would like to make a few suggestions to help your publicity and expand your community.

1.) Support a Mod/Game using your engine.

This is probably largest form of publicity but one of hardest. Support a mod/game that is different than what you guys have since you have fantast support combat or something etc. How this will help you? Well supporting a Mod/Game shows the potential community members/modders that you care that other people be using your product. A mod with separate goals than yours will also show what can be done if you support a fantasy mod with magician etc it gives an impression that it’s a great fantasy engine driving away more creative people. I myself and a mod/game developer and am intrigued in your engine. I have gave thought to starting a game/mod using it has crossed my mind but no farther than that. Anyways when I was modding for hl2 what I hated and hurts the community is low support from valve. This is a big turn off when it comes to developing for another engine. I could jabber all day on this subject but I will move onto number 2.

2.) Contest

Yes it’s an oldie but goodie. If you offer a reward like beta tester or getting your hands on expansion earlier this is not the best way. Yes they are free ways but not the best. Rewards like that people don’t care unless diehard fans. Even if you offer a game of his choice to grand prize and second place 20$ you will get submissions.

3.) Good OL PR
Publicizing in mod communities, game developer sites or fan sites are best areas.  You will get many more people to join your community and want to try to make a game/mod out of it. Some good pr sites would be like www.moddb.com , www.cgtalk.com, www.gamesutra.com and the list goes on.

4.) Press the engines limits. Then show off.

This is a great way to show engine capability push its limits in detail just even if one map it will show potential onlookers what the engine can do and the possibilities.

That’s all I can think of now but engine is great so is game I am really looking into possibility using your engine for a mod/game in the future. Comments are more suggestions to help out Glest would be great.

Also I seen this engine from cgtalk Tucho was pimping his awesome models.

^^ That is me sorry. I can't edit the post.

Also thanks for appreciating the ideas hope the glest team tries some. Most of these ideas come from 4-5 years in the modding community. I use to be a huge half-life fan. Half-life 2 ruined my joy in modding for them the engine is poorly documented and very little support for many programs. Anyways im going into making more independent games now and during my time modding those ideas i suggested always caught my eye. People who would push the limits of a engine (Hl Nightwatch best looking hl mod ever) or does has contest. Games like planeshift (mmorpg) help the popularity of crystal space cause it somewhat shows what you can do with the engine.

There is somethings im waiting on before looking into doing something invoving use of glest engine. Like saving, bump mapping and some other features added in. The reason for this is a got some rts ideas planned but im gonna use another engine until glest has improved some. I will keep coming around here maybe do some little things but I wont be doing any major projects till some things are done.

Glest has a ton of potential hopefully some people noticing it and utilizing its capabilities.

You could give the top five the ability to try out a version of the game earlier...or give them some exclusive thing. But how would you make a conest for this game?

Well there are several ways. Just depends on the route you wanna take. There is the concept part where you have people design wallpapers or draw a new type of race. Or more complex like make your own race with thier buidling tree, Design a small mod. Then you can do also things like taking a glest screen and use photoshop and creature a unique scene etc.. There is several things you can do you just gotta be creative.
