Mac OS X installation issue
« on: 15 January 2012, 21:57:48 »
I've been trying to download the Glest 3.2 port from Cider House (http://ciderhouse.opal.ne.jp/wp/english/glest) and I can't seem to get it to work. When I downloaded the Glest32App.dmg and ran Glest32App.mpkg it just installed a folder that 1. showed up as blank in Applications, and 2. I was unable to access in Terminal, even with sudo. I decided to skip it as it just checks for compatibility, at least that's what I interpreted it as. When I downloaded Glest32Data.dmg and ran Glest32Data.pkg, it "finishes" the installation but fails to produce anything. The website says it should install it in Library but I can't find the folder, nor does it show up in Applications.

Can anybody help me?

That version of glest is no longer in development

I strongly suggest you play Megaglest, which is still very much in development and Mac OSX releases actually work, ( I run them on a mac book pro)
Best part it works right out of the box.

Get MegaGlest 3.6.0.2 for OS X (intel machines) here:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/megaglest/files/megaglest_3.6.0.2/MegaGlest-Application-3.6.0.2_macintel_osx.zip/download

Glest Advanced Engine also is Mac compatible, though you'll have to compile it yourself:
http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/glestae/wiki/CompileGuideMac
Edit the MegaGlest wiki: http://docs.megaglest.org/

Waiting on MegaGlest to download, internet is slow today.

As for Glest Advanced Engine, sorry but I don't trust myself to compile anything yet, even with a guide. I'm fairly computer literate, but I'm just getting into open-source, programming, and stuff like that ;)

Error message. Similar to one that came up when I tried to run Warzone 2100. For that one, I was supposed to install XQuartz to replace the X11.app guy. Still haven't gotten it to work yet, but I'm waiting on a response on their forums. Entire error message is below. Ideas?

I'm not sure what you downloaded there, but it doesn't look like the latest MegaGlest release (version 3.6.0.2). Geovah (whose nickname is mentioned in your report) used to provide earlier test builds of MegaGlest. The current version of MegaGlest can be downloaded off its website at http://megaglest.org/ and bugs should be reported at http://bugs.megaglest.org/ (i.e. NOT here) - thanks!

Same thing happened. I'll try downloading the newest version of X11 to see if that works instead of XQuartz.

I've narrowed down the issue some. The error message occurred when the computer tried to access /usr/X11R6/lib/libfontconfig.1.dylib. I went into Terminal and got into the usr directory, but there's no X11R6. There's X11, but its lib directory doesn't contain libfontconfig.1.dylib. Apparently, X11R6 is the 6th revision of X11 by some open-source group if I read correctly. Unfortunately, their downloads for X11R6 are in .tar files, which I don't know how to operate. Googling it has not helped me at all.

Does anyone have the X11R6 or is yours just running off X11?

As a reminder, this is the General discussion forum. If you're looking for help with a specific software such as Glest (which is no longer developed and probably won't get any support), MegaGlest or Glest Advanced Engine, then you should ask for help in their very forums, providing information on what exactly you are trying to get to work and on which platform/OS version.

Sorry for that, I'll take it over to those now.
