MG 3.6.0.3 - nasty pauses on game start.

I thought I'd report this in case it may help (I use GAE, but downloaded MG last night to see what's new).

When I start a game, whether I'm connected to the Internet or not, there are pauses of 4 or 5 seconds at various points. One is when selecting 'New Game' -> 'Custom'. Another is when the game loads up and starts; when I select any unit there's a freeze, and sometimes when I then select other units. Once the initial pauses are done with, all is well.

The previous MG version did the same for me. If it's of any use; Toshiba LC-350 17" laptop, 2GB Ram, dual-core, with Vista Home Premium. (It runs GAE and MG well enough at 1440 x 900 resolution if I turn off shadows and tone down a few other things in the .ini file).

And just to confirm, you have not noticed any such behavior at all in GAE? I ask so that i know if this is isolated to MG or if its a common issue for both?

Hi softcoder. This is only in MG – GAE doesn't pause except as you'd expect when reading the game files. I assumed it's because MG is perhaps checking ports and whatever for online connections, which of course can cause a pause regardless of whether the machine is online or not. Anyway, it's not a terribly severe freeze, just made me go, "What the heck..?" when I first noticed it (and I use GAE for playing games so I can save them).

If possible, please enable debugging and pate the logfile contents so i can try to see what the slowdown is related to.

Edit ~/.megaglest/glestuser.ini

DebugNetwork=true

Save the file and run the same steps to reproduce the behaviour. Then paste the contents of ~/.megaglest/debug.log

Here you go: http://www.mediafire.com/?39hubljeoweiiqr – this contains 2 debug files; one when offline, the other when connected (just to the Internet, not a Glest server game).

Basically, I ran the game, selected a pre-set (last time) set of game options, went into the game. Clicked one unit, then another, then another and moved it. Quit the game. I did the same after connecting to the web, and the pauses looked much the same to me in both cases. Going to Options from the main screen causes the short freeze as well (which is about 6 to 7 seconds by my rough reckoning).
