MegaGlest 3.6.0.3 under Windows/Linux

I just thought I'd share some details which might help others with somewhat low-powered machines run Glest enjoyably. (Not sure if this is the perfect place for this, so mods please move if you think not).

My machine is a

I was running GAE under Windows Vista Home Premium (at full resolution but 16 colours) for some weeks, initially preferring it over MG as I wanted to save games. MG was pausing at various start-up points (which is mentioned in another thread). Long story short; I tried a few versions of Linux, but had nasty overheating problems, and finally solved it all by going to Linux Mint and using the Mate desktop, which seems to be less resource/CPU hungry. After much reading and testing I found that the following line in grub sorts the overheating/fan noise issue;

Code: [Select]
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 quiet splash pcie_aspm=force acpi_osi=Linux"
On testing GAE and MG, I found GAE has no pauses at start points, but MG runs faster, ie., higher frame-rate, and generally smoother and more responsive. (I turned off the '3D' mouse in the INI file too, which helps a lot). Things are a lot more fun now.

Regarding the Linux grub line, lots of forums and blogs list bits of the command line, but not all as it is above. As I'm no expert, I suggest that anyone modifying grub or other settings do their own research or accept the pain which comes from mistakes! ;)
